LOI Profile: Adam Patterson -- something new

South Carolina defensive end/tackle Adam Patterson kept telling us that he was interested in trying something new. We just had a hard time believing him because his recruiting behavior kept on a traditional 'Southern' course. In the end however, he proved true to his word.

South Carolina defensive end/tackle Adam Patterson kept telling us, we just didn't have ears to hear.

Going to Michigan, he told GoBlueWolverine in mid-January, would be, "a great chance for me to be exposed to something else, something new. And it's a chance for me to see how football is played in the North."

He told us the same thing again the last week of the month. And he reminded us that he'd been a 2004 Michigan Camper as well. But again we were skeptical. Why?

Well, Adam was following the traditional Southern recruiting path. He scheduled none of his official visits until Christmas vacation -- and he refused to pick up the phone to talk to the press beforehand. "Typical Southern kid," we told ourselves, who'll take Southern trips in January and go to school down there as well.

When his official visit list came out, there was Michigan on it, for his first visit, on the January 6th weekend. However, his one Northern trip, to U-M, was followed by trips to Tennessee, South Carolina, NC-State, and Auburn. We figured he'd end up at the local school, SC.

Meanwhile, once his visits began he also became very accessible to the press, and he was almost loquacious on the phone, and he kept telling us this other thing, that he was seriously thinking of getting "exposed to something else, something new."

After his last visit to Auburn the Jan. 27th weekend, he narrowed his list to two, U-M and SC.

And on Signing Day-eve he picked the 'Northern School' -- Michigan!

So what did the Wolverine-trick for him?

"First of all, the players themselves," he told us. "I developed a good relationship with the players over my official visit weekend. I made good friends with James McKinney, who was my host that weekend. Also, the new academic center, that place is phenomenal. And my Michigan recruiter -- I've known Coach Campbell since I was at the Michigan Camp two summers ago. I still have my plaque -- for Best Defensive Lineman."

Patterson is Scout.com's #33 East prospect, and he comes in even higher-ranked by Tom Lemming -- as the #xx prospect in the country.

Adam has been described to us as "a powerful guy," but insisted to us at the GBW/WTKA Signing Day Radio Show that, "I'm a defensive end." And with stats of 6-foot-3, 265-pounds and with a 4.65 second 40 yard dash, it looks like he'll line up at the strongside DE spot for the Wolverines.

Unless, in the end, he decides to try 'something new' position-wise as well.
