Helmuth attended a looked very well at the U.S. Army National Combine held last month in San Antonio. Before Helmuth left his home for the Alamo Dome, he got in touch with the Michigan coaching staff.
“I called the Michigan coaches and told them that I was going to attend their junior day when I got back from San Antonio,” Vince Helmuth said. “From that point, Coach Malone told me that Coach Carr told me that he wanted me to come over to the football offices a little bit earlier than everyone else.
“I think from that point forward, I kind of felt that Michigan was going to offer me a scholarship. I have to say that the night before the junior day, I didn’t get any sleep. I kind of told myself that I would wait this thing out and not commit to anyone until after my senior season.
“I lie in bed the night before Michigan’s junior day and I started to feel that if Michigan offered, I was going to accept. So my whole mindset kind of changed. I don’t think I slept at all the night before Michigan’s junior day.
“When I got to the Michigan football offices with my parents the next morning, Coach Jackson grabbed me and took me into his office. He showed me all the great fullbacks that he has coached at Michigan and he asked me if I wanted to be on that wall.
“From there, we went into Coach Carr’s office and he offered the scholarship. I didn’t get any sleep the night before but now I was wide awake. I asked him a lot of questions, including the possibility of getting into coaching when I was done playing.
“Coach Carr answered all my questions and he told me about the graduate assistant coach program and everything just seemed to come together. I’ve been to a lot of Michigan games and I knew there was no other place I wanted to be so I just had this big smile on my face, I looked Coach Carr in the eyes and told him that he can count me in.”
Helmuth is an also a track standout and he plans on participating in both football and track at Michigan.
