Jr RB Rob Hughes to GBW: 1st Jr. Day Stop UM!

Robert Hughes is a junior running back from Chicago Hubbard who will likely be a Top 100 prospect next season -- and who will give John Clay a run for the money for top Midwest RB next season. He attended the Junior Day at Michigan this past Saturday -- he made Ann Arbor his first Junior Day stop! GoBlueWolverine had gotten to know Hughes at the U.S. Army Junior Combine a few weeks ago, and we chatted with him about last Saturday's goings-on. (*WITH PHOTOS*)

GoBlueWolverine got to know Chicago Hubbard running back Robert Hughes at the U.S. Army Junior Combine a few weeks ago. We chatted with him about last Saturday's Junior Day goings-on.

Hughes first ran through the events of the Junior Day:

"It was pretty nice day weather-wise."

"First we all met in Schembechler Hall and Coach Carr gave a speech ... he told us why Michigan is one of the top colleges in the country.

"Then we met with all the Michigan coaches."

Next we got a tour of Schembechler Hall, the meeting rooms, the weight room -- that was amazing(!), the practice locker rooms. The freshmen have their own locker room in Schembechler Hall, which they explained to us is an old Michigan tradition."

"Then they showed us the indoor practice field -- they said they'd be starting on a new indoor facility next year, and that it'd take a couple years to complete."

"Then they showed us the outside practice fields."

"Then we went to the new academic building. It's amazing ... it looks beautiful ... and it feels like a real comfortable place to go in and study or just to lounge in."

"Then they took us to the Big House. We walked through tunnel -- that was awesome! They took us in the game locker room which is pretty nice."

"Then we took a shuttle to the basketball game ... I heard they won, but I had to leave at half time."

"I met with Coach Moeller and Coach Jackson, and I met with Coach Carr who me again that I had a Michigan offer."

Do you have any other Junior Days planned?

"I'm going to Iowa next week, with a couple of my teammates. Michigan was my first stop."

"I'll be up in the fall to see a game ... Vince (Helmuth, who committed on Saturday) wants me to come over and go to a game with him, so I'll be doing that."

"I'll probably do some one-day camps this summer, and take some unofficial visits. Michigan will most definitely be one of my stops this summer."

At the Army Combine you gave a top three of Michigan, Notre Dame, and Ohio State. How do things stand now?

"I don't want to say I have a top three ... Purdue, Illinois, Virginia, Michigan ... those are my offers."

"I'm also interested in quite a few other schools: Notre Dame, OSU, PSU, Iowa, Miami, Auburn, LSU, ... "

So you didn't commit like Vince?

(chuckling) "No, not yet." (chuckling again, just kidding around here).

"I just finished putting together a 30 minute highlight tape today, to send out to college coaches."

"But I will get back to Ann Arbor, I gave Coach Carr my word on that ... I keep my word, just like I expect him to keep his word on his offer to me."

The 5-foot-11, 227-pound Hughes was arguably the best back at this January's U.S. Army Junior Combine -- a strong Big Ten-style back with an excellent 4.1 second shuttle time as well. And he's a great, personable young man as well -- he was a natural leader during drills at the combine.
