Ryan Mallett Getting 2 Top Offers in the Mail

Texarkana junior quarterback Ryan Mallett is arguably the top football prospect in the 2007 junior class, and certainly one of the top ten. He made an already legendary appearance at the 2005 Michigan Camp last summer (read on to find out), and GoBlueWolverine has been keeping in touch with him throughout this fall and winter. Here's the latest.

Texarkana junior quarterback Ryan Mallett made an already legendary appearance at the Michigan Camp last summer (GBW will run audio soon of signee Quintin Patilla's 'shreaded brand-new receiver gloves' story), and GoBlueWolverine has been keeping in touch with him throughout this fall and winter. The latest: "I just got an official offer in the mail from Texas, and there is an official offer from Michigan in the mail too," he told GBW.

In the meantime, Mallett is busy starting as a 6-foot-7, 240-pound point guard for the Texarkana basketball team (this is his third year as a starter).

"We won a big game last Friday," he said. "We're 19-9 now. My next game is this coming Friday. Playoffs start in a couple weeks and we hope to be in them."

Michigan Assistant Coach Scot Loeffler has made several trips to Texarkana this past December and January -- GoBlueWolverine was in Texarkana on January 5th to scout Mallet playing hoops on the same night Coach Loeffler and Michigan Head Coach Lloyd Carr were in attendance as well.

Loeffler has been back in Texarkana since that appearance as well -- on his trip to Texas two weeks ago to visit Texas quarterbacks Nick Stephens (Dallas) and Taylor Potts (Abilene), he also made it over to watch another of Mallett's games.

About Loeffler, Mallett says, "Scot Loeffler is a real nice guy, lots of fun and easy to work with. My coach is good friends with him."

Mallett told GoBlueWolverine that he is considering some spring-break trips and that Michigan is under consideration, and that Michigan will be a summer camp stop for him as well. "I plan on attending the 2006 Michigan Summer Football Camp. I'm not sure if I'm going to make it up before then; right now I'm just busy playing basketball, so hopefully sometime in the spring time."

Mallett lists eight schools: Michigan, Texas, Arkansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, plus Baylor, Miami and Texas A&M ... Nebraska and Baylor had previously sent him written offers.

Last summer Mallett camped at Arkansas, Michigan, Nebraska and Texas.

Mallett's high school football career: he started the final three games of the season as a freshman in 2003 as Texas High made it to the state semi-finals. As a sophomore he led the Tigers to a 10-3 record and a trip to the Class 4A Division 1 State Quarter-Finals. This past season Mallett quarterbacked his team to a 9-2 record before falling in a classic 38-31 to Matt Stafford's Highland Park team; for the season he had a 63% completion percentage rate and earned district 12-4A Co-MVP honors.

Mallett was a 'ball-boy' at the Elite 11 Quarterback Camp last summer, where he was arguably the top passer there ... certainly one of the top two, with Stafford.

He plans to major in kinesiology in college.

Mallett is publicly naming no favorites at this time ("No," he said when we asked), but Michigan will be a strong contender for his services.
