EA Sport Player of Year Attends UM Junior Day

This young man was EASport.com's Player of Year -- as a sophomore! However, he has his head on straight -- we caught up to him while his mom was driving him home from work at the local Arby's.

Inianapolis Warren Central has become the dominant high school football team in the State of Indiana, winning the past three Class 5-A (largest classification) State Championships. The program was on the rise when the Wolverines' Chris Graham was playing linebacker there, and it has only gotten stronger with top junior prospects RB Darren Evans and S Jerimy Finch (GBW with Finch) leading the way.

Evans was EASport.com's National Player of the Year as a sophomore, and he followed that up for his junior season by rushing for 2,178 yards on 9.7 yards per carry, and 39 touchdowns. GoBlueWolverine caught up with the powerful running back on his way home from work last (Thursday) night.

"I was at Michigan's Junior Day a couple weeks ago," he told us. "Jerimy and I went up for it. It was real good -- the basketball game was fun, and we got to talk to the coaches quite a bit."

Had you been to Michigan before?

"I was at the Michigan Nike Camp last spring (his stats: 6-0, 205 lbs, 4.71 sec. 40, 20 bench press reps, 32.8-in. vertical, 4.69 sec. shuttle). Jerimy was there too (Finch's stats, altho he has had a growth spurt since then: 6-0, 204 lbs, 4.78 sec. 40, 16 bench press reps, 26.8-in. vertical, 4.56 sec. shuttle)."

(Note: Evans had almost identical stats at the 2005 Champaigne, Ill., Scout.com Combine as well.)

What did Michigan say to you at Junior Day about a scholarship?

"I wasn't offered, ... but they have told my coaches and student advisors that they will offer me a little later on."

"Jerimy was offered at the Michigan Junior Day -- he was given a verbal offer."

Have you been anywhere else this winter?

"I've been to a Junior Day at Notre Dame, and I was going to go to Iowa for one, but something came up and I couldn't go. And I'm going to a Junior Day at Ohio State on the 26th of this month."

Do you have any scholarship offers so far?

"I have one offer right now, from Louisville. Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, West Virginia -- they've all told me that they will eventually offer me."

Do you have camp plans for thie spring and summer?

"As a team we'll go to the Ohio State Nike Camp. As far as summer camps, I'm not sure, but our team will go to the Michigan Camp."

Have you talked to Chris Graham up at Michigan?

"One time we went up to Michigan and spent the day with him."

"I was a freshman when he was a senior here ar Warren Central -- I was brought up to varsity the last part of the season but didn't really play with him."

"Chris says that Michigan is a place where you're treated well, and where you're going to get a great education."

Warren Central's Head Coach Kevin Wright recently said this about Evans to IrishEyes.com:

"He's probably more of a LenDale White type of runner. He doesn't look like he's that fast. He looks like a bruiser, but he's got the speed and ability to make plays.

"He's a strong guy. He's the type that will literally take over games. There were games over the last two years where we just put it on his back and people had difficulty stopping him. He hits the hole very quickly. He makes subtle cuts, and then breaks tackles. He has a good combination of speed and size. He's a kid that is that linebacker type."
