U-M FB Recruiting Class 9th ... but What If?

This year's Michigan Recruiting Class finished tied for 9th in the Scout.com rankings, the fourth consecutive Wolverine recruiting class to finish in Scout.com's Top 10. The 20-member U-M class was top-heavy, with five players in Scout.com's Top 100 Prospects, all of whom also made Scout;'s Top 50. Michigan's five Top 50 recruits was third best in the country, behind only the two schools at the very top of the Scout.com rankings: no. 1 USC and no. 2 Florida.

Here is how the past four Michigan classes ranked as well -- these are the classes, along with the new 2006 group, which comprise the 2006 Michigan Wolverines team.
2005 - 2 (23 members, 2 Top 50, 5 Top 100)
2004 - 5 (22 members, 1 Top 50, 6 Top 100)
2003 - 8 (17 members, 3 Top 50, 6 Top 100)
2002 - 19 (20 members, 1 Top 50, 4 Top 100)

Notes:

As usual, U-M's is by far the smallest class in the Top 10; the Southern schools make their scholarships year-to-year and always sign at-or-near the NCAA maximums of 25 or 27 (with the allowed 'oversigning by 2' ... for schools to get above 27 takes' grey-shirting').
