Hemingway Topped U-M Campers in '05

South Carolina wide receiver Kenneth (aka Junior, aka J.R.) Hemingway traveled from Conway South Carolina to Ann Arbor last summer for the Michigan Camp and impressed everyone. He talked to GoBlueWolverine over the weekend.

J.R. Hemingway (6-2, 205) Profile

You traveled up to Ann Arbor last summer?

"Yes. My family and I decided we needed to go to Michigan for camp last summer."

What is it that attracted you to Michigan? Do you have family there, or have you been there before?

"I don't have any connections there. I've always liked Michigan, I've always watched them. I've been impressed by the receivers that Michigan has put out over the years."

Did your dad come with you to camp, or any of your teammates?

"No, I came up by myself."

And at camp, did you win one of the Smokehouse Awards (for fastest camper)?

"Yes. I won the race for the fastest receiver. It was a 40 yard race -- my time was 4.54 seconds." (note: the electronic times run in U-M's Oosterbann Fieldhouse fieldturf are notoriously slow)

Describe your 'game' as a receiver -- is speed your strong suit?.

"Well, I'm physical. I can catch the deep ball. With my vertical jump (my vertical is 37 inches) I can go up and get the ball. And I'm good at short routes."

And did Michigan offer you right away last summer?

"Yes sir, Coach Carr offered me right after camp was over."

Did you camp anywhere else last summer?

"Yes, USC." (South Carolina)

Have you made summer plans? Are you coming back to the U-M Camp this summer?

"We haven't decided yet, my dad and I. We're thinking about it, but we haven't decided."

I'll take a bunch of unofficial visits over the summer ... Michigan is likely to be one of them."

"Right now I'm thinking I might decide early ... probably at the end of the summer."

Have you got a list of favorites? Are Michigan and South Carolina at the top for you?

"Actually, I haven't narrowed it down to any favorites, I'm open. Michigan and USC have offered me and I like them, but I also have offers from Clemson, Maryland, Duke, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech."

"I'll be visiting a lot of schools over the summer."

Have you been to any Junior Days?

"No, I'm thinking of possibly going soon to see Auburn, North Carolina, Duke ..."

His junior season, Junior Hemingway caught 52 passes for 846 yards and 10 touchdowns. On defense he made four interceptions.

GoBlueWolverine note: Michigan is in a strong position for J.R., but the Gamecocks are too after taking Kenneth's Conway teammate this past Signing Day, RB Bobby Wallace. And with him taking unofficials in the summer, other schools will get their shots as well.
