Pacific Palisades (Calif.) offensive lineman Mitchell Schwartz (6-5, 305, 5.4) is still waiting on his first offer. But don't let that fool you -- the Scout.com three-star recruit is getting a lot of attention.
"I'm getting a lot of letters from Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, LSU, Miami, Boston College, Florida and basically the whole Pac-10," Schwartz said.
Schwartz denies a leader but said he's interested in Stanford, Notre Dame, USC, Oregon, Michigan, Arizona, California and Ohio State--in no particular order. "I really can't say that I like one school over another until I know how it's going to unfold," he said. "As soon as I start getting the offers, then I will have a better idea of where I might like to go."
"I really like Stanford," he said. "They have been recruiting me the hardest. I just got two different letters from them telling me that they planned on recruiting me until the end. That's how interested they are in me."
With a core 4.3 GPA and a 29 ACT in the books already, academics is a big factor in Schwartz's decision.
"Stanford is such a great school, both academically and athletically. I really like the coaches, they are just getting settled in and are doing great things. The campus is beautiful and I love the whole atmosphere of the school."
Schwartz said that the Cardinal has also expressed interest in him for baseball as a pitcher, but that his focus is mainly on football. He intends to attend Stanford's baseball camp during the July 4 weekend but doesn't anticipate playing college baseball.
"I like USC a lot too," said the Palisades Charter High School star. "USC is one of the best teams in the nation. They only brought in one offensive lineman this year so I know the coaching staff has OL needs. I haven't talked with them personally and they aren't sending me letters, but my coaches talked with them last week and I'm going to their Junior Day.
"Oregon is another school I like," Schwartz said. "My brother (OL Geoffrey Schwartz) is a sophomore there, so I already know the program and the coaches really well. We've kept in contact for a while through my brother and they've sent me some letters too."
"I'm also really interested in Notre Dame. They have a great tradition in football and academics," he said. "I've gotten a lot of letters from them. Coach (Charlie) Weis is a great coach. He's doing great things with the team. I haven't talked to them yet, but they came to my school. That was really exciting."
Schwartz said he is thinking about taking official visits to Notre Dame, Michigan and possibly Ohio State.
"I know Michigan is another great school where I can get a good education," Schwartz continued. "I've gotten a lot of stuff from them and they wanted me to come to their Junior Day but I couldn't make it. Like USC and Notre Dame, Michigan has so much tradition. They have a great track record and I really like Coach (Lloyd) Carr's style of coaching. I've never been to the campus or the state, but my dad's friend's son goes there and he loves it."
Schwartz also likes Arizona, Cal and Ohio State, and says they have also been recruiting him heavily. "I've gotten a lot of letters from Cal and Ohio State," Schwartz said. "I was pretty happy when I saw they were interested. I sent them some tape and am just waiting to hear.
"I'm going to the Nike combine at Stanford on May 13 and I also plan to go to a Scout combine in L.A. on May 7. I'll attend a few camps (Michigan, Stanford, Oregon, USC and Notre Dame) in late June. As for the rest, I'm just playing it by ear."
Schwartz said he doesn't want to make an early decision and expects to take all five official visits. Both of his parents attended UCLA but the Bruins are not a factor yet and he said his parents aren't trying to influence his decision.
Schwartz reports a core 4.3 GPA/29 ACT--June retake/April first time SAT.
