LB Blaine Irby Lists Offers; U-M in Top Five

St. Bonaventure High School in Ventura, Calif., is one of the top prep football programs in the State. Michigan is in early on two top prospects at the school, having offered both Michael Williams and Blaine Irby. On Tuesday, spoke with Irby to see if the Wolverines had a shot, and sure enough, they are in his top five.

With the transition occurring in the Michigan coaching staff, along with the change in recruiting territories, not much has been heard regarding the Wolverine presence in the West so far this recruiting season. However, don't think for a moment that the Michigan staff hasn't been active in the region.

U-M has recently offered two outstanding talents that hail from St. Bonaventure High School in Ventura, Calif. - just north of Los Angeles. recently spoke with defensive back Michael Williams, who list the Wolverines in his top two. His teammate, linebacker Blaine Irby, also recently received a Michigan offer, and spoke with GBW about his recruiting. "I received the offer from Michigan about three weeks ago," Irby said. "I also have offers from Ole Miss, Arizona State, Oregon, Washington State, Cal, and Texas and Miami just offered (on Monday). I like all the schools that have offered, but my top five are ASU, Cal, Texas, Miami, and Michigan."

Irby moved to Ventura from Phoenix, Ariz., last year, and told that ASU was the first to offer, and that he will visit for a Junior Day. "I'm looking to stay on the West Coast and be close to my family, everyone is out here," he said. "But my parents can fly for free because my mom is a flight attended, so I want to visit some schools and check them out. I plan on visiting Michigan, Miami, Texas, Oregon, Cal, and others. I've been to UCLA, Cal, and ASU."

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Irby said most of the schools were recruiting him for the H-back position, though Michigan was looking at him as a linebacker. "It doesn't really matter to me," he said. "As long as I get to play college football."

Irby said he would attend the combine at Cerritos College, along with the Nike combine at USC. He may attend the Nike combine at Stanford, but there may be a conflict with a major track meet. He said was he hasn't scheduled any school summer camps at this time.

On the track team, Irby said he participates in the 200-meters, the 4X100 and 4X200 relays, and sometimes throws the discus. He said he would like to major in business, and carries a 3.5 grade-point average.
