Michigan starts off once again with less than 20 scholarships available for 2007 -- of course, the number grew from 12 to 20 in 2005-06.
(Note: This "First Guess" list is inclusive, not exclulsive. Names will be added, especially through the spring and through camp.
We don't want to put a person on the list who doesn't belong there, but visa versa is certainly the case -- there wil be more.)
The need: critical, two needed.
Texas QB Ryan Mallett (6-7, 240, 4.8) Texarkana Texas. He was a 2005 camper, and may camp again in 2006, as well as possibly visiting in the spring. *He has a U-M offer*, and U-M's main early competition for him, Texas, has been 'dropped back' by him. Still, he also is taking a look at Miami/FSU, Alabama/Auburn, and USC. He is considered one of the nation's Top Ten juniors.
N.Y. QB Mike Paulus (6-5, 210) Syracuse, N.Y., Christian Brothers Academy. He's making a spring visit to U-M and ND, and to USC as well. Notre Dame leads for him, but hasn't offered (they are waiting for Jimmy Clausen); U-M is second. *He reportedly has a U-M offer*, and also has offers from Arizona State, Duke, Miami of Ohio, NC State, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Virginia, Wake Forest, Wisconsin. He plans to make an early summer decision. As a junior he threw for 2,100 yards, 20 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.
Vir. QB Peter Lalich (6-4 1/2, 205) from Springfield. The top performing QB at the U.S. Army Combine in January, Lalich now has a *U-M offer*, as well as offers from Miami, Pitt, UCLA, North Carolina State, Ohio State, and Virginia (leader). He attended the '05 OSU game. He is good friends with Chicago RB Robert Hughes. He is considered a top 100 Junior. He should made a summer '06 decision, maybe even by June 1st.
Pa. QB Pat Bostick (6-3, 220) from Manheim Township. As of early Feb. he had offers from Pitt, Louisville, UConn, Rutgers, Ole Miss, and Maryland. As a junior he passed for 2,820 yards (63% completions) and 34 touchdown passes with just six ints. He was a US Army Combine attendee and a U-M Junior day attendee as well. His head coached kicked for U-M. He is considered a top 100 Junior.
Ark. QB Stefan Loucks (6-2, 185) from Little Rock. He attended the N-Ill. game last fall. He has an Auburn offer. As a junior he completed 306-of-496 passes for 4,182 yards and 43 touchdowns.
Pa. QB Chris Whitney (6-3, 215) from Philadelphia St. Joseph's. U-M is his early fav. As a junior he accounted for nearly 2,000 yards of offense and 25 touchdowns.
Mich. QB Steven Threet (6-5, 220) from Adrian. He has attended a U-M spring practice. He was an '05 U-M camper, where he performed well, and where he and OL Josh Oglesby became friends. Indiana has offered him. He is a 4.0 student.
