QB Mike Paulus Takes a Weekend Midwest Trip

The quarterback situation at Michigan is one of the most interesting aspects of the 2007 recruiting season. With David Cone and Lee Mondol coming in the fall, it is yet to be determined how many QB's the Wolverines will take this year. One of those options, Mike Paulus, was in Ann Arbor this weekend. Paulus spoke with GoBlueWolverine.com about the visit, and where things stand.

It appears that the University of Michigan has decided on which quarterbacks it wants in the recruiting class of 2007. Ryan Mallett is the name mentioned most when talking about the Wolverines and quarterbacks. However, Mike Paulus of Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse, N.Y., also has an offer from the Wolverines. Paulus and his dad were in Ann Arbor over the weekend, during a Midwest swing that also included a stop in South Bend. "I was at Notre Dame on Saturday, and Michigan on Sunday," Paulus said. "It was the first time I'd been to Michigan and we were able to tour the campus. We went to the Big House, and it is very big. I was impressed. It was about the same at Notre Dame except they had a practice. Michigan didn't practice on Sunday."

Paulus said he was one of two QB's offered by Michigan. "We talked about what they wanted to do and that they would like two quarterbacks, but will most likely take one," he said. "Right now it's between me and Mallett."

The 6-foot-5, 208-pound Paulus is waiting to see what happens at Notre Dame. He stated previously to GoBlueWolverine.com that the Irish have told him that if Jimmy Clausen should choose a school other than ND, he would receive the scholarship offer. "We discussed the Clausen situation when I was there," Paulus said. "I'm not at liberty to say what was talked about, but I don't have an offer yet from Notre Dame."

He added that he is still interested in schools other than Michigan and Notre Dame, and will be continuing to take trips this spring. "I'm heading down to North Carolina next week," he said. "I'm on spring break and will be hanging out with my brother. On April 22 I will be going to USC (Southern Cal). They haven't offered yet but they are starting to show a lot of interest."

Paulus said he now stands at 25 offers, with Stanford being the latest. He added he would still like to make a summer decision.
