Chicago Hubbard's Robert Hughes ran for over 1,900 yards as a junior and is probably the Midwest's top junior RB. He's not a blazer-type back, he's a 'big back', a pounder, at 5-11, 225 pounds -- although he ran an excellent 4.1 second shuttle at the Army Combine in January, one of the top shuttle times of the event. And, as he tells us, he and Michigan have high, and increasing, regard for each other. Hughes was in attendance at U-M's final spring practice. GoBlueWolverine spoke to Hughes on Sunday.
Who'd you come to Ann Arbor with yesterday?
"I came over with Mr. Walton, (Michigan DL) Marques Walton's dad." (note: Walton also went to Hubbard High School)
How'd the day go?
"I got a chance to learn a lot more about Michigan, about the football program, about their depth chart at running back."
"I had great time. It was a real good experience with fans, who knew who I am and everything."
Who'd you talk to during the day?
"Coach Moeller (his area recruiter) and Coach Jackson (running backs coach), and some of the players. I also talked to Marlin Jackson and Larry Foote during the practice -- I went up and introduced myself to them. They told me about their experiences at Michigan."
"I also talked to Vince Helmuth -- I met him at Michigan's Junior Day. And I talked to some of the incoming guys -- Brandon Minor, Quinton Patilla, Brandon Graham."
Are you getting more comfortable?
"Yeah, most definitely; that's why I keep coming back to Michigan. I was at the Nike Camp there last spring as well. I'm getting more and more comfortable there."
Where else have you been this winter and spring?
"I went to an Ohio State Junior Day, to an Iowa Junior Day, and to a Notre Dame practice ... I'm planning to go to Minnesota, and back to Notre Dame this weekend."
At the Army Combine back in January, you had said that Michigan, Ohio State and Notre Dame were the three schools you wanted to focus on most. So you're getting to do that.
"Yeah ... only Michigan has offered me so far though, of those three schools."
So Michigan seems to be recruiting you the hardest right now?
"Yeah -- (Michigan Assistant) Andy Moeller has been doing his job with me, that's for sure. He has been to my school a few times already, and he's talked to my coach about me and where I'd fit in at Michigan."
And how do you feel about things right now?
"Well, Coach Moeller knows my interest in Michigan -- my interest is very high. Right now that's the school I want."
You had told us just a couple days ago that you wouldn't make an early decision. Do you still feel that way?
"I want to make a few more visits to Michigan before I decide ... that will make me feel even more comfortable there."
GoBlueWolverine will see how Hughes feels after his next Notre Dame visit, especially if the Irish offer him. And hopefully we'll scout him again at this Saturday's Iowa City Scout.com Combine. Stay tuned.
