Blue in the Bayou

The Michigan Wolverines are active in the Bayou State this year and one of their most visible targets thus far has been Lutcher High (Lutcher, La.,) defensive tackle Rolando Melacon. The explosive lineman has strong interest in the Maize and Blue. He informs's Allen Wallace of just how strong inside.

Rolando Melancon Profile

Defensive tackle Rolando Melancon (6-1, 270, 4.85) from Lutcher (La.) finished his junior season with 80 tackles and six sacks. He benches 300 pounds and squats 470.

"I can recognize the plays quickly and be ready," Melancon said. "I have a great first step and good speed off the ball. I have good footwork, but want to work on my swim move and handling double teams."

Melancon favors Michigan slightly over LSU, Tennessee, Nebraska and Arkansas. All have offered, plus Mississippi and Colorado.

"Michigan's roster has like five defensive tackles and four defensive ends, but by the time I graduate they'll be losing several of them and they said they will be looking for guys to come in and step up. They think I could play early and help out."

The only school that Melancon has already been to is local favorite LSU. "They are in my backyard so I grew up watching them," Melancon said. "They are only like 45 minutes away. I love the fans at Tiger Stadium. They go crazy on Saturdays. Louisiana really loves LSU football and they have great fan support. Also, they've sent a couple of DLs to the League recently.

"I'd like a chance to come in and play early," Melancon said. "I'll be looking at the depth charts and I need to make sure that I get along with my position coach. I'd like to go to a program that is competitive each year and has a shot at the national championship.

"The Nebraska depth chart looks good and the coaches are good guys and I get along with them well. Also, I hear nothing but good things about their campus and business program."

He reports a 2.5 core GPA and a 16 ACT, which he'll be retaking this month.
