When Terrence Oglesby walked on the basketball court at Crisler Arena this weekend, he was a bit taken aback. The Cleveland, Tennessee native saw the block M at center court, and it did something to him.
“When I first saw the M it was pretty intimidating,” recalled Oglesby. “Then I went over to the football stadium and went to the 50 yard line and saw it again. It looks different on TV. To see it in person…I enjoyed that.”
One of the primary reasons for the visit was getting the opportunity to interact with the Michigan players. Oglesby learned a great deal about his prospective teammates during open gym and came away impressed with the talent on the Wolverines roster.
“I had fun playing with the guys this weekend,” said Oglesby. “They are unbelievably athletic with big bodies. The games were very competitive and I like that because I am very competitive. I think I would feel very comfortable there”.
Oglesby more than held his own during the informal competitions. The 6-3, 180-pounder is the type of player that cannot be left open because of deadly shooting ability. He frequently hit deep three’s with defenders coming at him… and he never even flinched. The Michigan coaching staff understands just how valuable that kind of long range marksmanship could be to their offense and that was made clear during a one on one session with Tommy Amaker.
“Coach loves the game,” said Oglesby. “When we were watching film (discussing how he’d fit in), he got to talking about the offense and the secondary fast break, and his eyes would just light up. Coach Amaker is a real nice guy. I felt really comfortable with him. He is really down to earth. Coach Moore…that was my first time talking to him face to face. We usually text each other he is nice and down to earth. I really like the staff”.
So the question remains did Michigan offer Oglesby a scholarship?
“Yes,” responded Oglesby. “(Monday) before we left we had a meeting with Coach Amaker and we talked about it. Then he says, ‘I would love to have you come play for me.’ He thinks I can make an impact. It is an honor to get an offer from Michigan. It is hard to put into words how I feel about it. Michigan is a place of higher learning and my dad just loves the idea of being at a big time school like Michigan. You see the block M and everyone knows what you are talking about”.
Oglesby also participated in another important meeting while on campus…one in which Amaker’s job security was addressed.
“From what I understood from Bill Martin the athletic director, Coach Amaker is going to be there for a while,” recalled Oglesby. “I felt good about that. The relationship that I have with the coaches is very important along with the system that I am in along with campus life.”
With recent trips to Clemson (last week) and Michigan now out of the way, Oglesby has turned his attention to his upcoming Florida visit. He will be making his way to Gainesville to attend the Gators summer camp. Virginia Tech, Oklahoma, and many others are also interested in his services. Those that haven’t already gotten him on campus may run out of chances since the youngster expects to make a decision towards the end of July. He indicated that he might even do something at the Nike Camp, which takes place a bit earlier in the month. It will all depend on how comfortable he is.
GoBlueWolverine will have more on Oglesby in the coming weeks.
