Brian Smith Profile
Kansas linebacker/defensive end Brian Smith (6-2.5, 230, 4.7), from Aquinas High School in Overland Park, said he has ten written offers and a verbal from Purdue. Smith said he doesn't want to name a top five yet, but focused on Kansas State (offer), Iowa (offer), Michigan and Michigan State (offer).
"I am waiting until early August to name my top five because I still need to weed out schools with my dad, and decide which ones we are really going to focus on.
"I bring energy to the field and I hype up my teammates. I want to work on maintaining that intensity and working hard throughout all four quarters of a game," Smith said.
"Kansas State was the first to offer me back in March. I am actually on the road right now with some friends on my way home from their camp. This was my third time visiting Kansas State. This time I got some one-on-one time with Coach (Ron) Prince. I like him because he stresses the player-coach relationship and every player is looking for that," he said.
"Iowa was my most recent offer on June 16. Their linebacker coaches are impressive because they just had two of their linebackers drafted into the NFL: Abdul Hodge and Chad Greenway. I earned my offer from Iowa by participating at the camp. I didn't even get to walk through the facilities.
"I was a big Michigan fan when I was younger, but now I try to follow all the schools," Smith said. "My dad is e-mailing the coaches back and forth to see if they are going to offer me. When I went to their camp on June 20, they told me they like that I can be used as a linebacker or a defensive end, but I don't know if they are going to offer me.
"Michigan State will be one of my official visits--I want to go see one of their Big Ten games. Head coach John L. Smith is a good guy. He's not too coachy--he responds to you as a friend and not just as a coach.
"I'm done with my camps this summer. Since I've been gone a while, I'm going to focus on my team by practicing and spending time in the weight room," he said.
Final junior season stats: 100 tackles, 1 interception return for TD; 3 caused fumbles, 12 tackles for loss.
Smith reports a 3.2 core GPA and a 19 ACT.
Note: in GoBlueWolverine's opinion, Smith may be told U-M wants to see some fall game film before possibly offering ... but with recruiting one never know what might happen.
