Marquis Maze Talks About Michigan Connections

It is not often that Michigan will get a commitment for a guy who is such a sleeper that he's not even in the Database! Such is the case however for the Wolverines' 11th verbal commitment, "athlete" Marquis Maze from Birmingham, Alabama. He has quickly garnered some big-time Deep South scholarship offers, however ... do U-M fans have to worry about his commitment?

"Athlete" Marquis Maze (5-8, 175) from Birmingham (Alabama) Tarrant High School rushed for 1,109 yards and 19 touchdowns on just 95 carries (11.6 yards per carry) as a junior. He also recorded 26 tackles and six interceptions as a defensive back, and had an additional three touchdowns on returns. GoBlueWolverine talked to Michigan's 11th and latest verbal commitment.

You're a big-time 'sleeper' to fans in the Midwest, Marquis. Did Michigan just find you or have they been on you for a while now?

"Fred Jackson came and saw me at my school in the spring, and Michigan has been recruiting me hard ever since."

Had you ever been to Michigan before your visit this past week?

"Yes sir ... on June 18th (the first afternoon of the Michigan Camp ... he worked out as a running back)."

Do you have relatives in Michigan?

"Yes sir, in Detroit. I have cousins there, on my mom's side."

Will she move back to Michigan with you?

"Yes sir. She's a nurse. She didn't go to college in Michigan, she went to Virginia College. But she'll move to Michigan with me and get a job near Ann Arbor or Detroit somewhere."

So, why did you pick Michigan?

"I feel Michigan provides the best case scenario - the best mix of education and playing football."

It looks like you have offers now from Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, LSU ... are you still going to take some official visits?

"Yes. I'll visit Miami, Tennessee, Auburn, and maybe Southern Mississippi or Middle Tennessee."

Is your commit to Michigan firm then?"

"Oh yes, it is. We're moving up there!"

What positions do you play for your high school team?

"Quarterback, running back, wide receiver ... and free safety on defense."

What's your favorite position?

"Running back!"

What position would you like to play in college?

"Well, Coach (Fred) Jackson says I am an "athlete" ... so it will be anywhere they need me."

We've heard you referred to a as a human pin-ball. What are your best 40 yard dash times and vertical jump?

"My best 40 time this summer is a 4.37 (seconds), electronic. And my vertical this summer is 31 inches."

And who do people compare you to, as far as your style of play?

"Down here people like to say I remind them of Reggie Bush ... not that I'm as good or anything but that's what they say. Up in Michigan people might say Desmond Howard but he was a little before my time!"
