Calif. Star Sets Michigan Official Visit Date

With defensive coordinator Ron English and cornerbacks Coach Ron Lee both being from the West Coast, Michigan has jumped into the recruiting fray with several California kids. One of them has scheduled an official visit to U-M.

Markques Simas is a big, strong possession receiver from San Diego (Calif.) Mira Mesa. At the Los Angeles Combine this spring he measured 6-2 1/2, 200 pounds and with his size he physically overpowers defensive backs. And, he told GoBlueWolverine on Sunday, he has scheduled his first three official visits.

"I've got an official visit set to Michigan on October 6th, for the Michigan State game."

"I've also got official visits set for Colorado and San Diego State, but I don't have the dates in mind."

Simas said his top five is completed by, "Cal and USC."

"All five of my favorites have all offered me except USC, who tells me they need to do more evaluation first." (GBW Note: if USC were to offer Simas they would be a big threat.)

With U-M recruit Taurian Washington recently picking Ohio State over Michigan, Michigan fans would find Simas a taller version of Washington. At the Los Angeles Combine, Simas ran a 4.57 sec. 40 and a 4.4 sec. shuttle. So he has an over the middle possession-type receiver.

He told us, "The strength of my game is my route running, and my ability to go take the ball from defensive backs. And I can go up and get it well," as his 31.5 inch vertical jump at the LA Scout Combine attests.

As far as a timetable, Simas said, "I'll be ready to make my decision in December, before the holidays."

As a junior, he had 41 catches for 875 yards and 16 touchdowns. Simas was named first team all-league, first team CIF, and first team All State under-class.

GoBlueWolverine note: compared to Washington, Simas is a little taller, a little better jumper, but not quite as fast. Compared to J.R. Hemingway from South Carolina, ditto -- although Hemingway is a leaper as well. Compared to current Wolverines, Simas is a Greg Mathews clone.
