TBBlog: Wideout Recruiting Blue Hot

Just look at the MSU game visitors: QB Ryan Mallett, and WRs J.R. Hemingway, Toney Clemons, Marques Simas. You can bet that James Rogers will be there as well. Here is the latest on the wideout recruiting situation -- it's getting very hot! And we may as well include a Rojo future-visit update as well, since he can play wideout too!

Wide Receivers:. The recruiting need for Michigan strong: three, maybe four.

With James Rogers and J.R. Hemingway in the fold now, a third or fourth could come from Toney Clemons and either Marques Simas or Andrew Davis.

And Clemons and Simas are expected to be official visitors for the MSU game, with commits Rogers and Hemingway there as unofficial visitors -- along with Super quarterback commitment Ryan Mallett. An a-MAIZE-ing weekend is in store.

Here is the Latest on the Wideouts:

Mich. CB/S/RB/KR/WR Ronald Johnson (6-1, 200) from Muskegon, Michigan, can certainly play wideout, as GBW's report on Rojo's East Kentwood Performance of 2 TD receptions of 69 and 82 yards attests. He may very well be a Woodson-type two-way player in college. There is some talk that Rojo might be thinking about a Wisconsin game official visit ... that is not cast in stone, so stay tuned.

Johnson, Scout.com's #16 prospect, will make official visits to USC, Florida and Miami -- but Michigan is still in a strong position with him as well, and he attended the Vandy game. He has a younger brother, a junior, who was reportedly offered an MSU scholarship at the MSU camp. He did not camp at U-M this summer - his team had their own camp that week -- he tried to make it on Wed. but logistics didn't work out. In June he teased Ryan Mallett by telling him he was a U-M commitment. He attended a U-M spring practice. He ran a 4.0 sec. shuttle at the '05 U-M Nike Camp. He attended three U-M games this past fall. He missed his junior season with an ACL. He was a Jan. 06 U-M Junior day attendee, and an '05 U-M Camper.

Pa. WR Toney Clemons (6-2+, 190-pounds) from New Kensington, Pa., Valley. He has an official visit set to Michigan on October 6th, for the MSU game. He also has an official visit set to Colorado (Oct. 13); both have offered him. Other schools on his list are: Pitt, West Virginia, Rutgers, Syracuse, all of whom have offered, and Ohio State.

Pitt is perhaps the main competition to Michigan, and Scout.com's Pitt site reports on Clemons a Pitt visitor last weekend for their win over Virginia.

Clemons, Scout.com's #85 prospect, will not make an early decision. He visited U-M for a day during the U-M Camp and got to meet Ryan Mallett. He is impressed with the Big House and says he "hopes to see it when they're done" expanding it. He won the state championship in the 110m high hurdles with a 14.66 sec. run. The top player at the Pitt Scout.com combine and, in GBW's view, a 5-star prospect. U-M is his dream school, and he is a cousin of Steve Breaston. As a junior he made 43 receptions for 666 yards and 13 total touchdowns. 2.4 core GPA and 900/1600 SAT.

Col. WR Drew Davis (6-2, 200) from Denver Montbello. He is the teammate of Greg Banks, and is considered the #1 Col. Junior. His childhood favorite is Michigan, and Scout.com reports U-M has offered Davis now -- GoBlueWolverine has confirmed that the report is indeed accurate.

Davis, Scout.com's #59 West prospect, also has offers from Washington and Colorado, perhaps his current leaders, plus UCLA, Cal, Oregon, Arizona State, Arizona, Kansas State, Iowa State and several others. He intends to be a December '06 grad. As a junior he caught 45 passes for 988 yards and 13 touchdowns. He has a 4.0 GPA and an 18 ACT.

Calif. WR Markques Simas (6-2, 200 from San Diego Mira Mesa. Scout.com reports that Simas had a great opener this past Friday. He has a *U-M offer* and an Oct. 6 official visit is set.

Simas, Scout.com's #72 prospect, also has official visits set to Colorado and San Diego State, and Cal and USC (no offer) complete his top five. At the Los Angeles Scout.com Combine, Simas ran a 4.57 sec. 40 and a 4.4 sec. shuttle, and recorded a 31.5 inch vertical jump. As a junior he made 40 receptions (20+ yards per catch) and 16 TD's.

And don't forget the commitments:

Michigan commitment #7: James Rogers (6-2, 190) from Madison Heights Lampheer. He was an unofficial visitor for the Vandy game. Rogers had a strong U-M camp week -- fast, and he caught everything, even Ryan Mallett's bullets (more shreaded gloves to show for it!) -- and received an offer and accepted it on June 22nd.

Michigan commitment #12: S.C. WR J.R. Hemingway (6-2, 200, 4.58 at U-M Camp) from Conway, S.C. He is planning to make an unofficial visit for the MSU game. He committed to Michigan on Aug, 24, with Florida and Miami finishing 2nd. He visited U-M on June 23. He was a 2005 U-M camper and also camped at South Carolina. As a junior he recorded 55 catches and 10 touchdowns. He claims a 37-inch vertical jump. He is Scout.com's #95 prospect.

Other possibilities:

Neb. WR Niles Paul (6-1, 200, 4.4) from Omaha North. The Nebraska commitment has an uncle in Ann Arbor and may make a visit for the MSU game ... he does not yet have a U-M offer.

Texas WR Kevin Armstead from Humble. The transfer from Los Angeles Birmingham reportedly has U-M and Arizona offers.

Calif. WR/RB Malachi Lewis (6-4, 215, 4.3) from Oxnard Rio Mesa. He has a *U-M offer* now, as well as 20+ others. He has run a 10.8 100m. As a junior RB he ran for 2,200 yards and 25 touchdowns.
