The Finley Head Coach thought he was having visions of former Trojan QB Ben Roethlisberger again -- only this time the quarterback phenom was on the other side of the field.
Texarkana quarterback Ryan Mallett led the Texans to a 31-7 halftime lead, and the Texans coasted to a 44-7 victory.
Finley struck first, scoring its olny touchdown on the opening drive of the game. But Texarkana quickly got untracked.
The Texans went 80 yards on 9 plays to make it 7-7. Big plays: Mallett passes of 40 and 24 yards.
The next time Texas got the ball, it went 55 yards in 4 plays, and scored on a 16 yards Mallett TD pass.
The next time Texarkana got the ball ... 85 yards in 6 plays, and scored on a 13 yard Mallett TD strike: 21-0.
The next time ... 65 yards in 7 plays -- scoring on an 8 yard Mallett TD pass.: 28-0.
And the next time ... 72 yards in 10 plays, including a 59 yard Mallett pass, before kicking a field goal: 31-7 at the half.
The first time Texarkana got the ball in the second half -- another TD drive of 69 yards in 10 plays, finished off with a 42 yard Mallett TD strike.
The next time .... 81 yards in 8 plays, this time mostly on the ground. 44-7 (missed PAT).
Finley scored two pointless TD's in the 4th quarter.
For the game Mallett was 18-33 for 330 yards and 4 TD's. He also launched Texarkana's only punt of the game, on their first possession, for 52 yards.
Scouting Report. As if you need to hear it again ... of course we do. Mallett throws effortless 50 yard touch passes, and he puts the ball exactly where the receiver needs to get it in order to get maximum yards after the catch. He's keeps getting bigger -- he's an easy 6-7, 260 now, and still a good athlete. He can make all the throws, including rollouts. Texarkana has a good receiver and a good tight end to throw to ... the Texans will be hard to beat in Class 4-A (next to highest classification) this season.
During the latter part of the game GBW chatted with Mallett's dad, and after the game GBW walked with Mallett to the press room. He told us, "You bet I'm coming up for the Michigan State game. It's my official visit!" And, he added, "I'm still thinking about whether to graduate in December. I do have all my credits ..."
In the press room, an Ohio reporter told him that the Finley coach compared him to Roethlisberger. Mallett humbly said, "Well, he's in the NFL and I'm in high school ... it's not a fair comparison."
And he was asked if he played any other sports, and he said, "I play basketball." And then he was asked about graduating early, and he smiled and said, "It's 50-50."
