It was a big time matchup in Saline last week as the Saline High Hornets (6-0) took on Adrian Maples (4-2). The game featured two big time in-state prospects; Saline FB Vince Helmuth (a Michigan committ) and Adrian QB Steve Threet (who has pledged to Georgia Tech).
Neither player disappointed. Helmuth ran 25 times for 156 yards and two
scores, including one that put his team up 27-26 late in the 4th. Threet was
very impressive going 16 for 22, 293 yards and 3 TDs. Most importantly, he
engineered a two-minute drive at the end of the game and capped it off with
a touchdown pass to put the Maples up for good 34-27.
Helmuth had a strong showing on defense as well, forcing fumbles and a delivering few big hits on Threet. He looks to have slimmed down a bit from the previous times we've seen him, but he was every bit as tough and powerful. Helmuth is a grinder who doesn't go down on first contact. More importantly, he looked pretty good as a receiver and in pass protection. That bodes well
for his future at fullback with the Wolverines.
