Michigan Slogs to 17-3 Win Over Northwestern

It was a cold, wet, rainy day in Ann Arbor, with a few snow flurries mixed in for good measure. And the game reflected the weather. Michigan took a 10-0 lead into the half, then fought the wind in the 3rd quarter before putting the game away just before the start of the final stanza.

FIRST QUARTER

Northwestern took the opening kickoff and made two first downs, one a 17 yard pass completion, to the Michigan 35. But Lamarr Woodley caused and recovered a fumble at the U-M 48.

Michigan drove the ball on the ground, getting 3 first downs, then scored on a 14 touchdown pass from Chad Henne to Adrian Arrington at the 10:07 mark.

Michigan 7, Northwestern 0

Northwestern took the ensuing kickoff at their own 20. NW got a first down and crossed midfield, but fumbled the ball and Leon Hall recovered at the U-M 33 at the 8:29 mark.

Michigan went three and out.

Northwestern took the ball at the Michigan 20 at the 6:51 mark. Lamarr Woodley had a tackle for loss, and NW went three and out -- but U-M ran into the kicker. So Northwestern went three and out again, and punted from the NW 39 at the 3:37 mark.

Michigan took the ball at their own 29 at the 3:33 mark. They got one first down, then punted.

SECOND QUARTER

Northwestern took the ball at their own 3 yard line at the 13:00 mark. The Wildcats went three and out.

Michigan took the punt at the Northwestern 49 at the 10:53 mark. The Wolverines got three first downs, but the drive stalled at he Northwestern 13 due to two penalties. Garrett Rivas kicked a 30 yard field goal at the 6:58 mark.

Michigan 10, Northwestern 0

Northwestern took the ball at their own 26 at the 6:40 mark. NW went three and out.

Michigan took the punt at their own 40 at the 4:56 mark. They got one first down, then punted at he 2:48 mark.

Northwestern took the punt at their own 9 at the 2:30 mark. Northwestern went three and out. However, Steve Breaston fumbled the punt and Northwestern took the ball at the U-M 44 at the 2:01 mark. But the Wildcats could not move the ball. They punted, and U-M ran out the half.

Northwestern has 85 yards, 93 passing and -8 rushing.

THIRD QUARTER

Michigan took the kickoff at their 20 and went three and out (into a big wind).

Following a punt into the wind, Northwestern took the ball at the U-M 46 at the 13:10 mark. The Wildcats got two first downs, one on a 23 yard screen to Tyrell Sutton to the U-M 11. The drive stalled and Northwestern kicked a 38 yard field goal at the 9:38 mark.

Michigan 10, Northwestern 3

Michigan took the ball at their own 20, got one first down, then punted.

Northwestern returned the punt to the U-M 33 at the 7:19 mark.

Leon Hall intercepted the first play and returned it to the NW 36 at the 6:48 mark. On 3rd down Hart ran it 23 yards down to the 6. Two plays later, Hart ran it in from the 3 at the 4:05 mark.

Michigan 17, Northwestern 3

Northwestern took the kickoff to the U-M 33 and went three and out.

Michigan took the ball at their own 16 at the 1:13 mark.

FOURTH QUARTER

Brandon Minor fumbled the ball at the Michigan 24 yard line at the 14:34 mark. But on 3rd down Willis Barringer intercepted the ball in the end zone at the 13:34 mark.

Michigan got two first downs on two passes to Steve Breaston, one a 3rd down pass for 17 yards. But U-M had to punt.

Northwestern took the ball at their own 10 at the 9:46 mark. After getting a first down the Wildcats were stopped with a 3rd down sack and had to punt.

Michigan took the punt at their own 37 at the 8:14 mark. Michigan got 2 first downs to the Northwestern 23, but a field goal attempt by Rivas got blocked.

Northwestern took the ball at their own 23 at the 4:36 mark. They got 2 first downs, but David Harris made an interception, and Michigan ran out the clock.

Final Stats:

Michigan had 318 yards of offense, 202 rushing, 116 passing.
Northwestern gained 191 yards,204 passing and -13 rushing.

Chad Henne was 10-20 for 116 yards and a TD.
C.J. Bacher was 20-14 for 204 yards, but three 2 ints and was sacked 3 times, once by David Harris and 2 by Lamarr Woodley.

Mike Hart had 20 carries for 95 yards.
Tyrell Sutton had 7 caries for 6 yards.

Michigan had 12 tackles for loss for the game, including 3 by Lamarr Woodley.
Northwestern suffered 5 turnovers, 3 interceptions (by David Harris, Leon Hall and Willis Barrenger) and 2 fumbles (one caused and recovered by Lamarr Woodley). Michigan also lost 2 fumbles , one by Steve Breaston on a dropped punt, and one by Brandon Minor.

Michigan was just 4-15 in 3rd down conversions.
