CCHA Notebook: 11/08

GoBlueWolverine Magazine's weekly look around the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Where will Michigan stand in the Power Poll this week after splitting with the rival Michigan State Spartans? What will the Wolverines do in their weekend series against Nebraska-Omaha at home inside Yost Ice Arena.

Week in Review
In conference acition, Notre Dame continued to climb the CCHA ladder with a big three point weekend in Columbus against the Buckeyes. With the road trip to Ohio State out of the way, Notre Dame is in prime position to make a strong pitch for the CCHA regular season crown. Alaska also recorded a three point weekend with a win and a tie in Nebraska-Omaha and looks to be on the right path to clinching home ice in the CCHA tournament.

Perenial powers Michigan and Michigan State fought to a weekend split, each team winning on home ice, and the Miami University RedHawks held onto the top spot in this weeks Power Poll despite a weekend split at home with Northern Michigan. Lake Superior State and Bowling Green State also battled to a weekend split.

In single game action, Western Michigan beat up on Wayne State 4-0 and Ferris State battled Michigan State to a 2-2 tie on Tuesday night.

Power Rankings
1. Miami - RedHawks are holding on by the skin of their teeth after a weekend split with NMU.
2. Notre Dame - Irish continued their amazing season with a three point weekend at Ohio State.
3. Michigan - Split with Michigan State, but beat the Spartans for the first time in 10 tries on Saturday after a players only meeting after Friday nights loss. Have they turned the corner?
4. Michigan State - Split with Michigan and a tie with Ferris State on the weekend won't hurt the Spartans too much.
5. Alaska - Getting points on the road in this conference is impressive. Neutralizing Scott Parse on the road is even more impressive.
6. Northern Michigan - Picked up a critical split at Miami University.
7. Nebraska-Omaha - Will have their first real test of the season this weekend in Ann Arbor.
8. Ohio State - Ohio State continues to slide in the Power Poll after giving up three points to Notre Dame at home.
9. Lake Superior State - Lakers were hoping for a sweep of BGSU.
10. Ferris State - A tie with the Spartans could be the Bulldogs first sign of life this season.
11. Bowling Green - Would be thrilled with a split against Notre Dame.
12. Western Michigan - Would like to steal a few points from struggling Ohio State.

Players of the Week
Offensive Player of the Week
- Kyle Greentree, Alaska, in the Nanooks three point weekend at Nebraska-Omaha, Greentree recorded four goals, three assists and a +3 rating.

Defensive Player of the Week
- Tyler Eckford, Alaska, Eckford recorded one goal, including the game winner on Saturday night, four assists and a +2 rating in Omaha this past weekend.

Match up of the week
Nebraska-Omaha @ Michigan
Michigan needs to defend their home ice to remain in the thick of the CCHA title run. Nebraska-Omaha is coming off last weekends disappointing one point weekend with something to prove. Something's got to give. Who will want it more in the conferences most critical match up of the week?

X-Factor
Scott Parse vs. T.J. Hensick
While the first thought when the names Scott Parse and T.J. Hensick come to mind is offense, the X-factor for this weekend will be which one of the two is better on the defensive side of the ice. Both are gifted enough offensively to get theirs, which means this series will come down to who back checks the best to try and limit the others production.

Prediction
Michigan comes out hot after beating up on Michigan State last weekend. The Wolverines will use their momentum and come out flying to take both games at home in this series. Michigan comes out of the weekend with four points.
