Helmuth & 3 Other Commits Visit Next Weekend

GoBlueWolverine caught up this (Saturday) morning with Michigan's first verbal commitment for the 06-07 recruiting class, Vince Helmuth from nearby Saline, Michigan. Vince filled us in a little about recruiting, about his early entry into U-M, and about last week's state championship game.

GoBlueWolverine caught up Saturday morning with U-M verbal commitment FB Vince Helmuth (6-2, 240) from Saline, Michigan, just outside Ann Arbor. Here is what Vince told us:

"I'll be at the game today. It's just an unofficial visit. I know Ronald Johnson is there, and Brandon Herron from Texas, with Troy Woolfolk. A couple more too I think (Josh Brent and Austin Panter)."

"My official visit is next weekend -- it'll also be the official visit for James Rogers, Ryan Van Bergen and Martell Webb too."

We asked Helmuth about his enrolling in college early.

"Yeah, I'm enrolling at Michigan in January. Ryan Mallett and I have been talking about rooming together ... we talk about it, but it's actually not set for sure yet."

We asked Vince if he was at the State Championship game last weekend at Ford Field.

"Yeah, I was there. It was a great game -- Muskegon won by 2 (32-30) ... DeLaSalle was driving at the end to try to win it, they hit a slant pass and the receiver got to the one foot line ... he stretched out to try to score and fumbled into the end zone, Muskegon recovered ... 50 seconds left, game over."

Helmuth had a great senior season himself, rushing for 1,536 yards and 22 touchdowns this fall for the 9-3 Saline Hornets, who won two playoff games.
