Michigan Watches Rashad Mason at Work

A Michigan coach was at Nashville Pearl-Cohn High School last week to see big wideout/athlete Rashad Mason. The six-foot-five Mason told GoBlueWolverine about it last night, and about what schools he is interested in.

Nashville (Tenn.) Pearl-Cohn receiver Rashad Mason missed his entire junior season because of skull fracture he suffered in a serious car accident.

But the 6-5, 220 pounder had an excellent senior tilt, making 20 receptions for 650 yards and 13 touchdowns while adding 110 tackles and six interceptions from his free safety position.

He camped at Tennessee last summer and ran a 4.5 sec. forty.

But without junior film, colleges had to wait for his senior season to get seriously interested -- and interested they are. GoBlueWolverine spoke to Mason Monday evening.

Do you have a Michigan visit scheduled?

"Yes sir, for the 19th of January."

Was a Michigan coach in to see you at your school recently?

"Yes sir, a Michigan coach was here. It was Coach Lee."

What has Michigan said to you about a scholarship?

"Well, they said they want to offer me a full ride, a scholarship."

What other visits do you have scheduled?

"I go to UCLA on the 12th of January."

Who else are you interested in; who else do you think you'll visit?

"Old Miss I think; I might take the other two but they haven't been set up yet."

He also has offers from Louisville, Kentucky, and Arkansas.

What position are colleges telling you they want you for?

"Wide receiver ... everyone is recruiting me as a receiver."

Are you playing basketball now?

"Yes I am. Coach Lee watched me play a game when he was here. I play small forward and power forward ... we're 5-1 right now. I'm averaging 14 points and 10 rebounds a game."

What college football team did you follow growing up?

"USC ... I've always been a USC fan. They aren't recruiting me though."

Academically, Mason has a 3.0 GPA and scored an 18 on the ACT.

Mason runs track as well, the 100m, 200m, 4x100m and 4x200m for Pearl-Cohn.

GoBlueWolverine note: this could be an interesting UCLA vs. U-M recruiting battle ... watch for the next TJBlog for why.
