Position by Position, Class by Class: D-Line

Continuing GoBlueWolverine's look at the Michigan team, position by position, class by class. Next up, deffensive linemen. The losses of Lamarr Woodley and Rondell Biggs are pretty big for the Wolverines, losing Alan Branch would REALLY hurt at this juncture. What does the depth chart look like, and will incoming recruits help?

2007 DT Roster and Outlook:

Alan Branch.............80.....DT.....Senior......................(2004 Recruiting Class).
Terrance Taylor.......67......DT.....Junior......................(2005 Recruiting Class).
Marques Walton.........95.....DT......Redshirt Junior...........(2004 Recruiting Class).
Will Johnson.............97.....DT......Redshirt Junior...........(2004 Recruiting Class).
Jason Kates..............93.....DT......Redshirt Freshman.......(2006 Recruiting Class).
John Ferrara.............94.....DT......Redshirt Freshman.......(2006 Recruiting Class).
Marques Slocum........XX.....DT......Redshirt Freshman.......(2006 Recruiting Class).

2007 DE's Roster and Outlook:

Tim Jamison.............90.....DE.....Redshirt Junior............(2004 Recruiting Class).
Eugene Germany........96.....DE.....Redshirt Soph.............(2005 Recruiting Class).
James McKinney.........44.....DE.....Red-shirt Soph...........(2005 Recruiting Class).
Brandon Graham..........55.....DE.....Redshirt Freshman.......(2006 Recruiting Class).
Adam Patterson..........99.....DE.....Redshirt Freshman.......(2006 Recruiting Class).
Greg Banks................ 92.....DE.....Redshirt Freshman.......(2006 Recruiting Class).
Ryan VanBergen.........XX.....DE.....Freshman..................(2007 Recruiting Class).

Losing DE's Lamarr Woodley and Rondell Biggs are pretty big losses for the Wolverines. As can be seen from the depth chart above, losing Alan Branch would REALLY hurt at this juncture, what with Marques Slocum not practicing for the Rose Bowl with the team. On the other hand, Greg Banks and (particularly) Adam Patterson were two of the young guys Ron English mentioned as performing well in practices. Plus Brandon Graham is being counted on to be a future star - GBW is guessing at DE. And GBW assumes that Ryan Van Bergen could end up at either DE of DT for the Wolverines.

2007 Recruiting Outlook

We will start with some closer-in kids in looking to next season's DL recruiting. Indianapolis Warren Central DT Steven Barnett (6-2, 250 ... U-M fans can only hope that Warren Central stays open as a U-M pipeline), Grosse Ile Mich. DE Lonnie Pugh (6-6, 250), and Det.McKenzie DT Anthony Woods (6-4, 275). Pugh and Woods were not spotted at U-M games this past fall.
