Fresno Edison Coach on Sears, Bolden

In 2005 Michigan signed Johnny Sears from Fresno (Calif.) Edison. Next year there will be another coveted cornerback from Edison, and GoBlueWolverine scouted and talked to the CB and his coach Tony Perry at the Army Combine. Here is what Perry said to GBW about his junior corner -- and, perhaps even more interesting to U-M fans -- about Sears.

Junior Robert Bolden is a strong 5-10 cornerback from Freson, Calif. Edison. At the Army Combine he showed good speed (a 4.55 guy perhaps) and was a 'hitter' more than a smooth cover corner.

Here is what Edison's position coach Tony Perry told us about Bolden.

"He is going to be another good one -- in the same class as Johnny (Sears), altho he's not as tall. He has verbal offers from Arizona, Michigan, Washington, Washington State and Ole Miss."

Bolden adds to a very strong group of Junior defensive backs strong considering the Wolverines: CB Boubacar Cissoko, S Bobert Blanson, CB Jarred Holley, CB Leon Green, and there is another corner from Edison who did well at the combine as well, Brandon Wesley (who looked 5-9). The Wolverine should be able to get well stocked at DB in the '07 and '08 recruiting classes, both at safety and at corner (altho if Jermiy Finch does not return to the fold, the Wolverines may still be on the lookout for a SS).

As we said, Tony Perry also coached Wolverine Johnny Sears at Fresno Edison, as well as NFL CB Ricky Manning (who, by the say, camped at Michigan before his senior year in high school). Here is what Perry said about Sears:

"When Johnny returns to Ann Arbor next fall, he'll be another player entirely, you'll see. He'll be ready to take on the wide side corner spot now that Leon Hall is gone. Johnny has all the ability at 6-2 and FAST as all get out, he just lacks experience, having missed his whole junior year of high school and then having appendicitis the spring and summer before his senior year. So that has just put him behind, and he's still catching up. But Michigan needs him next fall so we're going to get him ready -- I promise you that! Johnny is going to spend the summer in LA with Ricky, and he'll be working out with Ricky every day."

"You'll see -- he'll be ready!"
