Hunwick named Defenseman of the Week

Michigan captain Matt Hunwick has been named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Defenseman of the week for his performance this past weekend in a home-and-home series with the Western Michigan Broncos.

Matt Hunwick, the senior captain of the No. 8-ranked Michigan ice hockey team, earned the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Defenseman of the Week honors earlier this week the league announced.

In the Wolverines 7-4 win over the Broncos on Friday in Kalamazoo, Mich., the Michigan captain recorded a pair of assists along side his +3 rating on the contest. The next night in Ann Arbor, Hunwick logged another assist on Michigan's game-winning shorthanded goal and was an impressive +2.

Hunwick has now picked up five Defenseman of the Week awards over the course of his career and is the second straight Wolverines to retain the honors. Sophomore Jack Johnson was named CCHA Defenseman of the Week for his performance against Ferris State two weekends ago.

Michigan returns to the ice on Friday night in Bowling Green, Ohio, for a game with the BGSU Falcons scheduled for a 7:05 start time. Following the BGSU game, the Wolverines head to Detroit for a Saturday night contest with the Michigan State Spartans at Joe Louis Arena.
