2007 Roster Analysis & 2008 Recruiting

After looking at the 2007 Michigan football roster, depth chart and also looking at GoBlueWolverine's "2008 First Look", ErocWolverine put a list together of how many scholarships might be available and who might fill them in 2008 recruiting class. In order to break it down, he had to choose a ‘desirable number' of players per position.

These numbers are very liberal and are just his take on what most coaches would possibly like to have for their roster. So the numbers are flexible; for example you could have a few more D-line and less O-line or vice versa regarding other positions.

The upcoming spring practice starts March 17, 2007 and runs through the Spring Game on April 14, 2007, so some players might be on the lists that follow, but not actually on the team next fall, or vice-versa. Usually we do not know until spring practice who is on the team, and that still doesn't mean all those players will be on the team come fall practice as well. We will not actually know until "Media Day" in August who is on the 2007 Michigan football team. Also, there are a lot of questions about what position certain players may end at and who the starters will be, so this “Michigan Football Universe” is not meant to be in any way definitive. However, it does lay out the whole team in a detailed, comprehensive way.

With having less than the allotted 85 scholarship rule with 80 (our unofficial calculations) that means some walk-ons will get a one year scholarship for the upcoming 2007 season for the preferred kids. Also, with the 2008 scholarships totaling72 totals right now with one being a commit Michigan can have 12 more commits for the 2008 season (13 Total). Obviously coming out of the spring practices and going into the fall we will be able to tell if any other kids will leave the program: which if any additional fifth year guys may not come back/not be asked back, guys who may transfer, medicals, etc. You have to think Michigan will probably get closer to 18 scholarships again in 2008.
