Brandon Beachum Coming For Jr. Day

At the 2006 Army All-American combine, GBW noticed an elite safety who was one of the top defensive backs in attendance… it was a surprise to find out that he was only a soph at the time! After another year of growing, this elite prospect is now a head-hunting linebacker. GoBlueWolverine took some time to catch up with Lock Beachum, the father of Cardinal Mooney RB/LB Brandon Beachum.

GoBlueWolverine spoke Sunday evening with Lock Beachum, the father of Youngstown, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney RB/LB Brandon Beachum.

What position(s) does Brandon play for Mooney?

"Brandon plays running back on offense and plays a safety/linebacker hybrid position on defense."

What are Brandon's measurables right now? ?

"He's 6-feet-1, 222 pounds, and he runs a 4.62 40. He's playing basketball right now so he won't be participating in any football camps until March. "

What are Brandon's strengths and what are some of the things that you feel that he needs to improve on? ?

"Offensively, he is a really powerful runner who has great balance, real good hands, strength and change of direction. His speed is good, but not great – like breakaway speed when going against a 4.3 speed defensive back. He could also work to improve on his pad level and his vision."

"Defensively, Brandon has great instincts. He can stop on a dime, he make plays all over the field. He's a playmaker who explodes through a tackle and he will hit you … hard. He needs to continue to improve on finishing plays and finding the ball carrier at times."

What are the important qualities and factors will you be focusing on when looking at schools? ?

"First and foremost, we will be looking at the academics and especially a top-notch business program. We will also be looking at the social aspect since he is a young man. In addition, we want a strong athletic program that really builds character and builds young men … some place that feels like home."

What interests you and Brandon about the University of Michigan? ?

"(laughs) Where do I start? The first thing I think of is tradition. Michigan has one of the best, if not the greatest, tradition in college football. Basically, they play great football and they have a great tradition. They have the most winningest program in the college football."

"Two of my friends actually played for Michigan, Diallo Anderson [played safety during the early 90's] and Sylvester "Buster" Stanley [played nose tackle in the late 80's and early 90's]. Michigan football is football at it's finest."

"Brandon loves Michigan. Michigan is definitely one of the schools that is high on his list."

Does Brandon have a timetable for making his decision? ?

"Well I think that he will wait a little because this is a big decision and really it is one of the two most important decisions of your life. He'll be choosing his direction in life. Brandon will graduate early and he will enroll early in the school of his choice. He's on target academically and is fully qualified with his test scores to graduate early. So sometime before that."

Beachum currently has offers from Oklahoma, Nebraska, Iowa St., Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Colorado.

According to Mr. Beachum, the three Cardinal Mooney kids – Beachum, Dan McCarthy and Michael Zordich will all be attending this Saturday's Michigan Junior Day. And he confirmed that so far, of the three, McCarthy has a Wolverine offer, received from Coach Carr on Signing Day.
