Position X Position, Class X Class: 'Backers

Where will the new Michigan Wolverine recruits fit into the overall team-scheme of the 2007 Michigan football season? Also what about 2008 Michigan recruits as well? How is the Wolverine football team lining up for the future? Next up: The Linebackers for the Michigan defense in 2007, and a 2008 recruiting class first sneak peek.

2007 Line Backers Roster, Outlook and 2008 Recruiting:

2 Shawn Crable, SAM LB, Red-shirt Senior, 2003 recruiting class, probable starter

37 Chris Graham, WILL LB, Senior, 2004 recruiting class, probable starter

Austin Panter, MIKE LB, Junior, 2007 recruiting class, possible starter

49 Johnny Thompson, MIKE LB, Red-shirt Junior, 2004 recruiting class, possible starter

8 Jonas Mouton, SAM LB, Red-shirt Freshman, 2006 recruiting class

36, Quintin Patilla, WILL/SAM LB, Red-shirt Freshman, 2006 recruiting class

46 Brandon Logan, WILL LB, Junior 2005 recruiting class

33 Cobrani Mixon, MIKE LB, Red-shirt Freshman, 2006 recruiting class

Marell Evans, SAM LB, Freshman, 2007 recruiting class

Brandon Herron, WILL LB, Freshman, 2007 recruiting class

   2007 Outlook:

There are barely enough bodies at the linebacker position, especially for spring practice, and lack of quality depth is a question this coming year. As usual, the spring will get a better idea what kind of depth Michigan will have in the fall.

It is hoped that Shawn Carble can pick up in 2007 where he left off on 2006 and become Michigan's best linebacker in recent years (although it will be hard for any U-M LB to have a better season than David Harris did last year). Crable better stay helathy and be a 'mountain man', because backing him at SAM will be Jonas Mouton, newly switched to LB, Quintin Patilla who may be better suited to WILL, and, in the fall, freshman Marrell Evans.

At the MIKE spot, it is hoped that JC transfer Austin Panter can come in and really challenge Johnny Thompson for the starting spot. Cobrani Moxon adds depth but may still be a year away from significant PT.

And at WILL, it is hoped that Patill will continue his sleeper-rise at Michigan and challenge Chris Graham. Brandon Logan adds depth.

  2008 Linebacker Recruiting:

Michigan loses Crable and Graham to graduation.

Michigan added a MIKe, a SAM and a WILL to its 2007 recruiting class, but needs at leas one more of each in '08. GBW's list is just getting put together with players being added during this early recruiting class of 2008.

Ohio LB/RB Brandon Beachum (6-0, 220) from Youngstown Cardinal Mooney. This guy could be a great WILL LB, and is coming to Michigan's Junior Day.

Pa. LB Shayne Hale (6-4, 230) from Monroeville. A Scout.com Top 100 Junior, he is coming to Michigan's Junior Day, but OSU leads early.

Fla. LB Nigel Bradham (6-2, 225) from Crawfordville, Fla., Wakulla. The three Florida schools are considered to have the inside track for this Top 100 Junior, but believe it or not he told GBW that U-M was one of his top three schools.

Ohio LB Jamiihr Williams (6-1, 220) from Trotwood-Madison.

Pa. OLB/DE Adrian Robinson (6-2, 225) from Harrisburg.

Ohio LB Jason Staples (6-3, 215) from Lakewood St. Edward (Cleveland area).

Col. LB Jon Major (6-3, 220, 2.58) from Parker. He has multiple offers, including from U-M. Scout.com Top 100 Junior.

Ill. LB Steve Filer (6-3, 220) from Chicago Mt. Carmel. He reportedly has multiple offers, including from U-M. Scout.com Top 100 Junior. He will attend a U-M spring practice.

Ohio LB/FB Michael Zordich (6-2, 210) from Youngstown Cardinal Mooney, the Div. 4 Ohio State Champ. He is attending the U-M Junior Day on Feb. 17.

N.Y. LB/RB Latavius Murray (6-3, 210) from Onangoga (Mike Hart's school).
