Position X Position, Class X Class: RB's

Where will the new Michigan Wolverine recruits fit into the overall team-scheme of the 2007 Michigan football season? Also what about 2008 Michigan recruits as well? How is the Wolverine football team lining up for the future? Here are the running backs for the Michigan offense in 2007, and a 2008 recruiting class first sneak peek.

2007 Tail Backs Roster, Outlook and 2008 Recruiting:

20 Mike Hart, Senior, 2004 recruiting class, starter.

4 Brandon Minor, Sophomore, 2006 recruiting class.

3 Kevin Grady, Junior, 2005 recruiting class.

23 Carlos Brown, Sophomore, 2006 recruiting class.

Avery Horn Freshman, 2007 recruiting class.

There is plenty of depth and variety if all stay at RB at Michigan. Mike Hart: will he be the only running back to carry the ball in the big games or can the other running back's get their shot. Brandon Minor  needs to continue improving and look to get more snaps this year. Kevin Grady: will he be around long enough to compete for the back up spot ... spring ball might tell the story. Carlos Brown: will he find his place in this offense this spring, or else move to defensive back? Avery Horn most likely red-shirts, but if there are only two other RB's come fall he probably won't be able to.

2008 Tail Backs Recruiting:

Michigan loses Mike Hart to graduation.

Will the depth chart play a role like it did in 2005 and 2006, with '05 seeing Max Martin go elsewhere and '06 Mister Simpson? Losing a four year starter like Mike Hart, the Michigan coaches may really be able to sell to running back recruits playing time as a true freshman. Getting an "elite" running back should be a priority this year. GBW's list is just getting put together with players being added during this early recruiting class of 2008.

2008 Running Backs early possibilities:

Tex. RB Sam McGuffie (5-9, 185, 4.26) from Cypress (Houston area), Cy-Fair High. He has a 46-inch vertical leap who they call "White Lightening," has a U-M offer. His dad is from Flint and is a big U-M fan and the dad's side of the family is still in the Flint area. He and OT friend J.B. Shugrarts will make it up to Ann Arbor this summer -- look to see if he attends the U-M Camp. He attended the Oklahoma junior day recently and really enjoyed it, and recently got a Notre Dame offer as well. So he may just decide to go through the recruiting process a while.

Calif. RB Darrell Scott (6-1, 2-4, 4.4) from Ventura St. Bonaventure (Michael Williams' school). U-M has offered. Scout.com Top 100 Junior. In 2006 Scott rushed for over 3,000 yards for his 11-3 Moorpark team.

Mich. RB Jonas Gray (5-10, 210, 4.6) from Detroit Country Day. He had a good performance at the Army Junior Combine. Scout.com Top 100 Junior. He should be at the U-M Junior Day.

Ga. RB Dontavius Jackson (5-11, 195, 4.5) from Heard County (Carlos Brown's alma mater). He attended the CMU game last fall. As a junior he rushed for 2,462 yards and 29 touchdowns; as a safety he recorded 74 tackles and 3 interceptions defensively.

Ohio RB/DB DanMcCarthy (6-1, 190) from Youngstown Cardinal Mooney. The Top 100 Scout.com Junior was offered by U-M on Signing Day and was planning attend the Feb. 17 U-M Junior Day, but has a basketball conflict.

Ohio RB Darius Ashley (5-8, 185) from Cincinnati St. Xavier. Planned U-M Junior Day attendee.

Instate RB Deandre Johnson (5-7, 170) from Madison Heights Madison. Planned U-M Junior Day attendee.

2007 Full Backs Roster, Outlook and 2008 Recruiting:

39 Andre Criswell, Red-shirt Sophomore, 2005 recruiting class.

Vince Helmuth Freshman, 2007 recruiting class.

Will Paul not coming back kind of hurts depth issues and really puts the pressure on Andre Criswell to step up ready to play. During the spring they will likely look for somebody to possible move to this position to help with the depth chart. Otherwise Vince Helmuth may have to get ready fast.

2008 Full Back Recruiting:

Michigan loses nobody to graduation.

With depth chart an issue Michigan will certainly try and get another full back for this upcoming class. . GBW's list is just getting put together with players being added during this early recruiting class of 2008.

  2008 Running Backs early possibilities:

RB/FB Christian Wilson (6-2, 210lbs, 4.55/40) from McKees Rock (Pittsburgh area) Pennsylvania (Montour High School). As a junior he had 900+ yards on only 150 carries as a junior, and 70+ tackles as a LB. He looked good at the Army Junior Combine. Received a U-M Signing Day offer and is attending the U-M Junior Day.
