Cardinal Mooney's McCarthy on U-M's Jr. Day

Youngstown Ohio's Cardinal Mooney won the Div. 4 Ohio State Championship in '06. Their stars: QB Dan McCarthy, FB Michael Zordich, and RB Brandon Beechum ... the same three led the defense as well with McCarthy at S and Zordich and Beechum at LB's. All 3 kids are top U-M recruiting targets, but the one with a schollie offer at this early point -- Dan McCarthy. GBW caught up with Dan Monday night.

Dan McCarthy is a 6-foot-1, 190-pound run-pass quarterback for Cardinal Mooney who as a junior ran for over 1,300 yards from his QB spot. But his college position: safety. GoBlueWolverine spoke with McCarthy Monday night.

Were you at the Michigan Junior Day? You weren't at the basketball game.

"Yeah, I I was there. But I had to leave early for a (Cardinal Mooney) basketball game."

Did you meet with Coach Carr?

"I got to talk to Coach Carr in his office. It was real nice to just to talk to him and get to know him better."

Michigan had already offered you?

"Yeah Michigan officially offered me on Signing Day. I called Coach Carr and he offered me."

What position did Michigan offer you for?

"They are telling me I'll most likely play safety but are calling me an "athlete" so they can move me to wherever they need me ... maybe wide receiver."

Who else has offered you at this point?

"Ohio State, Akron and Indiana are my only official offers right now."

Who else have you have been in contact with?

"I've been talking to Florida, LSU, Notre Dame, pretty much all the Big Ten schools, Boston College, and Stanford. I'm not really worried about the schools I haven't heard from yet, it's still early."

What other Junior Days are you attending or have you attended?

"I'm most likely going down to Notre Dame on March 4th for their junior day."

Do you have a top list of schools?

"Its really too early in the game; I really haven't thought much about it yet."

What is your recruiting timetable?

"I want to take all my visits over the summer so I can make my decision before the start of my senior season."

Are you planning on camping at Michigan this summer?

"Yeah, I'm planning on doing a one day camp there. Michael (Zordich) and I pretty much go to the same camps so we are both looking into it."

Will you be doing any other camps?

"Depending on who offers me and what my summer looks like, I would like to get to a few so I can do the visit thing and see all the schools."

Note: Cardinal Mooney had a make-up basketball game Saturday afternoon, so McCarthy and Zordich and their families made an extra effort to get to Ann Arbor early in the frigid winter morning, before the Junior Day actually started, in order to make it all the way back home for their game.
