Jon Major Talks Michigan, Recruiting

The state of Colorado has been good to the University of Michigan in recent years, generating 2007 class tight end commitment Steve Watson and 2006 class defensive lineman commitment Greg Banks. Michigan is again after some big fish in Colorado for 2008, none bigger than Ponderosa high school inside linebacker Jon Major.

Holding over 20 offers, including one from the University of Michigan, Jon Major is one of the more highly recruited and coveted linebackers nationally for the 2008 class. At 6-4, 220 pounds and running a sub-4.6 40 yard dash, it is without question that Jon has the size and speed that have many of the top schools in college football drooling over him." Jon had an excellent junior season registering 107 tackles, 1 interception, and 4 forced fumbles through only 7 games.

Fortunately for Michigan, Major has some familiarity with the Michigan program. "I watched some of their games on television last year," he told GoBlueWolverine. "I also attended the Michigan vs. Ohio State game in Columbus this past year. It was a really good game."

When it comes to professional players, Jon likes the playing style of pro-bowler and Chicago Bears super linebacker Brian Urlacher. "I have good instincts, I play downhill and sideline to sideline. I'm also a leader on the field." He added that he would like to improve on over-pursuing plays. Jon is a humble team-player that was somewhat reluctant to talk about himself. When asked about his goals next season, Jon stated, "I wouldn't be satisfied with anything less than winning a state championship, and I think we have the guys to do that."

Jon expects to have a busy summer playing baseball where Jon is a right fielder and the clean-up batter. He expects to take some summer football visits, but he doesn't have any concrete plans in place yet. Jon doesn't have a decision time-table in place and will instead wait until he finds a school that just feels right.

As far as what he is looking for in a school, he said, "I want to go to a place with good academics, good coaching, and a place where I just fit."

Jon did take some time to talk a little bit more about the University of Michigan. "I hear a lot of good things about Michigan. They're a good academic school and their tradition is one of the tops in college football."

Although Jon is taking his time with the recruiting process he did offer some insight into where he currently stands. "I don't have any leaders right now. I'm still just trying to learn some more about the schools that offered and seeing who else will offer." Among the schools that Jon lists as stand-outs, four schools consistently stick out: Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Penn State, and Michigan. When asked if these are the four schools that stand out the most to him, Jon agreed: "Yeah, you could say that."

Another aspect of Jon's game that leaps out at the observer is Jon's intelligence. In addition, Jon gets it done in the classroom reporting a 3.7 GPA.

GBW will keep you up to date throughout the recruitment of this standout linebacker.
