Catching Up With Sam McGuffie

It's been a hectic-but-great winter for Houston running back Sam McGuffie. He and his buddy J.B. Shugarts are trying to take in Junior Days, and Sam is running track for Cy-Fair High School as well. He took a couple minutes Sunday to clear up a few things for GoBlueWolverine.

Sam McGuffie has been to Junior Days at Texas A&M and, with his friend J.B. Shugarts, Oklahoma. The two were reported to be going to the LSU Junior Day this past weekend, but McGuffie told GoBlueWolverine that they did not go. "I had a track meet Saturday," he said.

Oh yeah -- track! McGuffie has to 'squeeze' that in as well! Last year he qualified for the Texas UIL State Championship meet in the long jump with a 24-foot leap.

And this spring (yes, it's already spring in Texas ... highs around 70 these days) he told us he is participating in, "The long jump, the high jump, the 110 high hurdles, and the relays -- the 4X100 and the 4X200," for Cy-Fair.

McGuffie could run the 100 meters too of course -- he's had a 10.4 100 in the past. And he's recorded a 14.0 sec 100m high hurdles as well.

And it's too bad there is not a 40 yard dash race -- he recorded a 4.33 sec. electronic 40 in the Houston Area Combine last year, as well as a 3.78 sec. shuttle and a 46 inch vertical jump. Add in a 345 pound bench press -- that's not bad for a 'little' running back.

And by the way, he's not so little anymore. He's still growing (his dad is 6-5 and over 250 pounds) -- he is pushing 5-11 in stocking feet and has hit 190 pounds. Geez, that's the same size - except a shade taller - as a certain current star U-M running back ... hmmm ...

By now, everyone knows that last season he ran and leaped (Click the link for Sam McGuffie on YouTube) his way to a Houston area single-season rushing record of 3,212 yards and 44 touchdowns, adding 400 receiving yards and 4 more touchdowns, as Cy-Fair returned to football glory with a 12-2 record.

What intrigues Michigan fans about Sam is that he has family in Michigan, and his dad is a U-M fan. Sam told GBW, "Yeah, my dad is from the Flint area, and his family is up there. And I've been back there for family visits a few times in the summer."

But, does that mean McGuffie is leaning to Michigan? One has to imagine what it is like for the guy. He started out in January getting an offer from Texas Tech ... GREAT, they were his "leader." Then Kansas and KSU added offers ... then he went to a Texas A&M Junior Day and got offered there. Georgia Tech offered. Meanwhile, Michigan also was on him hard and offered. Then he went to an Oklahoma Junior Day (with Shugarts) and they offered. This was all by the Feb. 7 2007 Signing Day! Since then, Notre Dame, Florida and Alabama have all piled on with offers.

It gives a guy a lot to sort out:

After his Texas Tech offer -- they were his stated leader.

By mid-February, he said: "Notre Dame, Michigan, Oklahoma, Georgia Tech and Texas Tech."

Then just a few days ago: "Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Florida and Georgia Tech."

We asked Sam about these various top fives and whether he has a firm list of leaders, and he said, "No. You have to add Alabama now too, and you can't leave out Texas A&M and Texas Tech. So I don't really know. There are a lot of schools that I'm interested in right now."

This is simply the time of year where the offers pile up for a top guy, and once a school like Michigan or Oklahoma throws their offer down, they really come in hot and heavy.

Sam wants to make a decision before school starts in the fall (as does Shugarts). The two will take some spring and summer visits together. Shugarts, remember, has a final four (no order): Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Florida. So it's a sure bet that those four schools, Michigan included, will get visits by both guys.

In the meantime, for the next couple months, for Sam McGuffie, it's track!

(GBW Note: there is another LSU Jr. Day on March 10, and McGuffie and Shugarts are now planning go to that one.)
