Wrestling Over, O'Neill Turns to Football

There were four juniors in the MHSAA wrestling finals at 285 pounds this past weekend, out of 16 competitors overall. Junior Mike Martin from Detroit Catholic won it, and Grand Havenite Dann O'Neill finished second best of the Jrs. and in 7th place overall. But he's glad wresting is over -- it's on to football!

GoBlueWolverine spoke Sunday evening to the father of Grand Haven, Mich., offensive tackle Dann O'Neill (6-6, 285). Here are Mr. O'Neill's comments on several pertinent subjects.

First, regarding the wrestling tournament:

"Dann wrestled one of the best kid he's seen in the opening round (and he lost, dropping him to the consolation round)."

"But he's All State, he medalled his first time to the State Tournament. He stepped it up and did well."

What's next for Dann:

"As I told you before, Dann's glad wrestling is over for this year. And he is not going out for track this spring; he's going to be lifting to get ready for football in the fall."

"I'm the Strength and Conditioning coach for Grand Haven."

As far as recruiting goes:

"I know we're going to a Michigan practice, in fact we'll go to a couple."

"I'm not sure if we're going to the first practice or not. My wife's mother lives in Ann Arbor, and we'll go when we can stay a couple days. But Dann has his sports banquet next Sunday so we'd have to come right back."

As far as his offers now, Mr. O'Neill said: "Dann has offers now from Michigan, Purdue, UCLA, Florida State, and Nebraska. And Syracuse is chasing him pretty hard."

And as far as his top schools: "Right now he is thinking most about three schools: Michigan, Purdue, and UCLA."

"We have some relatives in Southern California, but I'm not sure I can see Dan going that far away. We'll see of course."

"He really likes Purdue. When we were there last Saturday (for a Junior Day) they laid out for him what his role would be."

"Of course when we get to Michigan Coach Moeller (the U-M O-line coach) and Coach Stripling (O'Neill's area recruiter for U-M) will do the same thing. They'll go over the depth chart and show him what's available and why."

"A big tackle is a pretty scarce commodity, and Dann knows there is room in the depth chart at Michigan."

"In Dan's heart of hearts ...the biggest competition for Michigan might have been Notre Dame. But when we were there last Sunday he saw they were loaded with linemen, and they didn't really recruit him hard."

"I think Dann will get out to UCLA before he makes a decision."

We also talked about the latest trend in recruiting, kids graduating at semester. "Dann is an August baby so he's already young for his grade, so I'm not sure that would be a good thing for him."
