Kremer's Weekend Picks
Games of Sept. 7
Michigan 42, Western Michigan 10: No Philip Brabbs heroics will be needed in this one. The Wolverines have too much size, speed and strength for the Broncos.
Ohio State 49, Kent State 7: There will be a Golden Flash when Kent State's players run on the field, all right. At that exact moment, they'll realize just how much they're in over their heads here.
Michigan State 56, Rice 14: More of the breakfast buffet for the Spartans. They devour their second straight creampuff.
Southern Mississippi 21, Illinois 20: The Golden Eagles boast the No. 1 defense in CUSA and picked up a boost with the return of RB Derrick Nix in their rout of Jackson State. Nix sat out much of the last two seasons with a kidney ailment. Illini are 10-15 on the road under Coach Ron Turner.
Notre Dame 23, Purdue 21: The Boilermakers are comfortable in the role of spoiler, but not playing in South Bend. Irish have won 12 straight in this series playing on their home turf. Placekicker Nicholas Setta puts them a leg up once again.
Iowa 28, Miami (Ohio) 21: The Hawkeyes invade the Cradle of Coaches and turn to Kirk Ferentz to pull a rabbit out of the Redhawks' hat. Ferentz best beware of Miami QB Ben Roethlisberger. He can throw.
Wisconsin 28, West Virginia 24: Rest easy, my friends. The controversy has been settled. The Mountaineers' mascot will be allowed to shoot his musket at Camp Randall Stadium under an exception to the UW rule prohibiting firearms on campus.
Minnesota 31, La.-Lafayette 10: The Gophers will dedicate this one to 19-year-old redshirt freshman Brandon Hall, who was shot and killed Sunday morning.
TCU 24, Northwestern 20: The Wildcats turn to QB Brett Basanez for a spark on offense. The Horned Frogs are playing a Big Ten team for the third time in the last 20 years.
Utah 31, Indiana 20: The Utes are favored to win the Mountain West and will draw inspiration from a big crowd in their home opener. Michigan fans will want to check this one out. Utah comes to the Big House on Sept. 21.
Last week's record: 10-1; Season to date: 10-1
