Detroit Southeastern wideout Fred Smith made his way to Ann Arbor Saturday to take in his first collegiate practice of the spring. After watching the players that he had seen on to television so often go through drills, he was able to spend a little one-on-one time with the man in charge of molding them. During that conversation, the message was very clear.
"He was just talking about how important the decision on which college I will go to will be," Smith said recalling his chat with Lloyd Carr. "He talked a lot about the positive things that come with being a Michigan athlete."
Michigan wide receivers Coach Erik Campbell also conversed with the talented pass catcher, once again letting him know that Ann Arbor was the place for him.
"Coach Campbell just told me I could commit whenever I wanted to," Smith said laughing. "They didn't put any pressure on me though. They just told me it was my choice."
Smith has long mentioned plans of taking a more deliberate approach to his recruitment, which would enable him to get out and take a few official visits. While that is still the most likely scenario, his recent interactions with Michigan have caused him to have second thoughts.
"I'm still thinking about (whether to decide early or later on)," said Smith. I know I'm real high on Michigan. I'm real real high on Michigan. But I just really want to see what the recruiting process is like. I'm still thinking about it."
For now, Smith's immediate plans consist of working out for track (for which he indicated he recently ran a 10.5 100m) and making it to more spring practices. Right now, though, his visit itinerary only has one destination on it.
"I'm not sure where all I'm going to go," he said. "I haven't made any plans to go anywhere else yet. I just know I'm going back up to Michigan tomorrow (Tuesday). I talked to someone from Ohio State. My coach was talking about going up there this Saturday, so we'll see."
GoBlueWolverine will have more on Fred Smith in the coming weeks.
