BigTenRon makes his weekly predictions

Do you like the Wolverines over the Irish? What about Ohio State vs. Washington State? Are Joe Pa's Nittany Lions really back?

Michigan 31, Notre Dame 21: The Wolverines have a solid defense and special teams that can make special plays, too.

Ohio State 33, Washington State 24: The Buckeyes and Craig Krenzel will catch the Cougars napping at least once with their new-look no-huddle offense.

Nebraska 38, Penn State 17: QB Zach Mills is developing into a good one in Happy Valley; but Cornhuskers will go away unimpressed.

Michigan State 28, California 14: Spartans received a wakeup call from Rice a week ago. They'll roll here behind the pitch-and-catch combo of Jeff Smoker and Charles Rogers. Cal's hopes rest on the running of Terrell Williams.

Illinois 42, Arkansas State 10: Jon Beutjer makes his first start for the Illini; he needs help from a vaunted corps of wide receivers. They've dropped too many balls in losses to Missouri and Southern Mississippi. Illinois played both those games on the road. They'll return to the friendly confines and return to their winning ways. The Indians have a playmaker in RB Antonio Warren.

Purdue 23, Western Michigan 12: The Boilermakers fell short in their big to be a `spoiler' at Notre Dame last weekend. They'll be favored to whip the Broncos, but that's easier said than done.

Iowa State 23, Iowa 20: The Hawkeyes return home after squeaking past Miami (Ohio); they'll be hit by the Cyclones. Iowa State QB Seneca Wallace is a dangerous runner and thrower.

Wisconsin 35, Northern Illinois 10: The Huskies beat Wake Forest in overtime in their home-opener, then fell flat on their faces against South Florida without RB Thomas Hammock. Badgers better enjoy the chance to start 4-0. Arizona and Penn State are up next on the UW schedule.

Minnesota 28, Toledo 21: Rockets beat Gophers 38-7 in their season-opener last season. Minnesota coach Glen Mason isn't about to let anybody in his camp forget that.

Duke 23, Northwestern 21: Somebody has to win. Kentucky 34, Indiana 27: Don't look now but the Wildcats are poised to go 3-0. QB Jared Lorenzen (6-4, 275) is surprisingly agile for a man his size.

BigTenRon's record Last week: 10-0; Season to date: 20-1 (.952 percentage)
