Stonum, McGuffie Talk About the Future

Cy Fair great Sam McGuffie qualified for the Texas 5-A State Track Meet at the Houston-area regionals Saturday, and Dulles great Daryl Stonum was shooting for qualifying as well. GoBlueWolverine spent the day at the meet and chatted with both guys.

Sugarland Dulles wide receiver Daryl Stonum (6-2, 200) finished third in the 200 meters at the regionals, just missing qualifying for the state finals (the top two finshers qualified).

As far as recruiting, Stonum told us:

"Troy (Troy Woolfolk) is coming up to Ann Arbor in June and July. So I'll come up in June with him."

However, he had been told in the past two weeks down in Texas that U-M frosh QB Ryan Mallett was considering transferring, and he added: "If Ryan Mallett transfers, it would effect my decision. Michigan is a top program and they'd get a good quarterback. But Ryan is a good quarterback so it would make a difference. I'll talk to Coach Jackson again about it soon."

And finally:

"Michigan is still up there for me ... but I don't have a leader right now."

Houston Cy-Fair's running back Sam McGuffie qualified for the 5-A state track meet in the long jump with a 23-3 leap. He'd decided to forgo trying to qualify in the high jump and high hurdles in order to run on the Cy-Fair 4x200 relay team -- which ended up scratching and not qualifying for the state finals.

We got to talk to Sam on and off, most of which was not for the record. He did tell us some things about his recruiting process however:

"Coach Jackson was here yesterday. He watched me at the meet. And we talked. He talked to Darryl (Stonum) too."

However, he told us, "I'm just focused on track and the state meet right now, so I'm not thinking about recruiting."

"I will take summer visits ... and I will visit Michigan in the summer."

McGuffie did not want to be quoted on the record on the Mallett situation ... repeating, "I'm focusing on track, through the state meet."

Note: the Dulles 4x200, with Stonum and Woolfolk on it, failed to qualify as their first-leg-runner had problems and got far behind. Also, Troy Woolfolk pulled up a bit lame in the 100 meters and failed to qualify in that event as well.
