2007 Roster Analysis & 2008 Recruiting: RBs

After looking at the 2007 Michigan football spring roster, depth chart, and also looking at GoBlueWolverine's 2008 Best Guess list, "ErocWolverine" updated his projection of how many scholarships might be available for each position group in 2008 recruiting class. In part two of this series he breaks down the running backs.

2007 Tail Backs Roster, Outlook and 2008 Recruiting:

Mike Hart

2004 recruiting class

Brandon Minor

2006 recruiting class

Carlos Brown

2006 recruiting class

Kevin Grady

2005 recruiting class

Avery Horn

2007 recruiting class

** Probable Starter.

--- Medical issues.

~~ Wont be here until the fall.

Mike Hart has to get some help carrying the load this year and needs a break in the big games. Brandon Minor needs to continue improving and look to get more snaps this year especially with Kevin Grady out for the season with an ACL injury. Carlos Brown has given indications that he plans to come back in the ball and will be back on offense. Michigan could really use him as a change of pace type of back with his speed. Avery Horn most likely red-shirts, but might find his place in the special teams return game or if he somebody gets hurt.

2008 Tail Backs Recruiting:

Michigan loses Mike Hart to graduation.

Losing a four year starter in Mike Hart, the Michigan coaches can really sell to running back recruits playing time as a true freshman.  Getting an elite running back is a priority this year, as is creating depth.

2008 Running Backs early possibilities:

Sam McGuffie (5-10, 190 lbs) from Cypress, Texas (Houston Cy-Fair). The latest we hear on McGuffie (Mar. 23) is that things still look good. "White Lightning," as he is called, has a U-M offer (he talked to Coach Carr on Signing Day), and U-M has offered him #2, and is on top right now. His dad is from Flint and is a U-M fan (as is the younger brother) and the dad's side of the family is still in the Flint area. He attended the Oklahoma, Texas A&M and LSU Junior days this past winter. He wants to decide before his senior season.

Covaughn Deboskie (6-0, 192 lbs) from Chandler, Arizona (Hamilton). He has a U-M offer now, to go along with offers from Washington State, Florida, Georgia Tech, TCU, Stanford, Oregon State, UCLA, Arizona, Illinois, Arizona State and Navy. He does plan to visit U-M for the summer camp. As a junior he ran for 1304 yards and 22 touchdowns (on just 150 carries, 8.7 yards per carry) as Hamilton went 13-1 record and won the Division 5A State title.  Ran a 4.38 forty at the LA scout combine.

Ryan Williams (5-10, 205 lbs) from Manassas, Virginia (Stonewall Jackson). He has a U-M offer, as well as many others. As a junior he rushed for 1,574 yards and 19 touchdowns on 157 carries (10 yards per carry).

Darrell Scott (6-1, 205 lbs) from Ventura, California (St. Bonaventure). (Michael Williams' school). No U-M offer as yet. Offers from USC, UCLA, Colorado, BYU, Florida and Texas. Scout.com Top 100 Junior. In 2006 Scott rushed for over 3,000 yards for his 11-3 Moorpark team, and has run a 10.68 100m.

Jonas Gray (5-11, 214 lbs) from Beverly Hills, Michigan (Detroit Country Day). He had a good performance at the Army Junior Combine and is an early Scout.com Top 100 Junior. He attended the U-M Junior Day, and a spring practice. Gray who currently holds offers from Michigan State, Florida, Minnesota, Illinois and Colorado, has Florida, Illinois and MSU offers at his early point, but a U-M offer would likely jump the Wolverines to the top.

2007 Full Backs Roster, Outlook and 2008 Recruiting:

Quintin Patilla

Red-shirt Freshman

2006 recruiting class

Vince Helmuth

2007 recruiting class

** Probable Starter.

^^Graduated high school early.

Will Paul not coming back kind of hurts depth at this position and really puts the pressure on Quintin Patilla and Vince Helmuth to step up and be ready to play. After a very strong spring Mark Moundros (walk-on) might just win the starting full back spot. Another player that could factor in here is Andre Criswell.  With two TEs coming in from the 2007 recruiting class, he might make the move

2008 Full Back recruiting:

Michigan loses nobody to graduation.

With depth an issue Michigan should try and get another full back for this upcoming class.

2008 Running Backs early possibilities:

Christian Wilson (6-2, 222 lbs) from Mc Kees Rock, Pennsylvania (Montour). He attended the U-M Spring Game, and also attended the 1st U-M spring practice. He was offered by U-M on Signing Day. He did not attend the Feb. 17 U-M Junior Day, opting for the Pitt Jr. Day instead. His offers: Auburn, Clemson, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, Purdue, Louisville, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, and a host of others that takes his number to over 40. He lists a top 7 schools: Auburn, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Penn State, Pitt, Ohio State and Michigan. He looked good at the Army Junior Combine as a RB, but may be best suited at H-Back or LB. As a junior he had 900+ yards on only 150 carries as a junior, and 70+ tackles as a LB.
