Garrett Goebel’s offer list reads like a tally of college football’s best programs from coast to coast. Everyone from Arizona State to Ohio State to Notre Dame has offered him a scholarship. Now add to that, the Michigan Wolverines who were one of the more recent teams to officially offer the 6-5, 272-lb. defensive tackle. It would be easy for a big timer like him to narrow his list down to just a few of the top schools pursuing him, but Goebel is dedicated to keeping an open mind.
”I’m interested in 24 schools right now,” he said.“ I want to narrow it down at the end of the month.”
Goebel also stated that he wants to make a decision by the start of his senior season at Montini. However, there is a lot for him to do and see before then.
”I’m going to Notre Dame on May 31st and other than that, I’m undecided,” he said regarding his summer plans.
Part of that process could also involve deciding where this talented player lines up at the college level, as he has the skills to be effective on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.
”A lot of schools heard I’d like to play defensive line, so they said I could play either,” Goebel said.“I would prefer defense though.”
Although he is unsure about whether or not he will make it to Ann Arbor for summer camp, Goebel is maintaining contact with the Wolverine staff and could make the relatively short jaunt from Lombard, Illinois up to Michigan at a different time.
”I’ve talked to coach Andy Moeller before and to be honest, I don’t
really know much about Michigan right now,” Goebel admitted. “But
they have a great tradition between football and academics. I would like to
visit there sometime.”
