Martin Talks Michigan Offer and More

Detroit Catholic Central's standout defensive tackle Mike Martin enjoyed a strong PSU NIKE Camp this weekend. Prior to that, he had already received good news as his childhood favorite offered him earlier in the week.

”Brute strength,” “bullish,” “a dominator" ... all words used to describe Mike Martin’s game. Colleges are always looking for an anchor for their defensive lines, and the Detroit Catholic Central product fits the bill. His low center of gravity, strength, and understanding of leverage and angles made him nearly unblockable for much of last season, and this past weekend offensive linemen at the Penn State NIKE camp found out what most of the East Side of the State of Michigan already knew.

”Yeah, I think I did well,” Martin said of the camp. “The competition was good, but I thought I did well still. The one-on-ones were definitely the highlight, but the only thing was I didn’t get to go as many times as I wanted.”

The opportunity was also there for Martin to check out the campus in Happy Valley as the Nittany Lions are one of the teams interested in him. He, in turn, has them in his top five.

”I want to schedule another visit to Penn State,” he said. “This time, I got to see the campus with Coach [Ron] VanderLinden. He showed me around and we hit it off.”

In addition to Penn State, Martin’s visit list also includes Northwestern, Michigan State, Iowa and Michigan. He plans to travel to all five destinations and make a decision before the season starts. Each of the five schools have offered, with the Wolverines being the most recent.

”Coach Moeller texted me and told me to call him,” recalled Martin. “I called him back and he said he had talked to Coach Stripling and that Strip had seen me at a camp and that they wanted to let me know that I’d have a chance to play at Michigan. Then he said Coach Carr is overseas right now and when he came back, he would come to my school and officially offer me.”

That offer carries a lot weight for Martin since Ann Arbor is fairly close to where he has grown up. It also has ties with him through several family members and also childhood memories.

”Michigan is one of the top schools in the country,” he said. “It’s right there at home. I’ve been watching them since I was a little kid. I had some of my family (cousins) go there and it’s great to get an offer from your dream school.”

GoBlueWolverine will be following Martin closely over the next few weeks.
