Cronin Goes Blue

New Michigan basketball commitment Ben Cronin recaps the whirlwind day that ended with his announcement. The Syracuse, NY native indicated that he actually arrived at his decision not long after leaving an impressive unofficial visit last week.

Wednesday was a very exciting day for Syracuse (NY) Henninger High center Ben Cronin. It was a day he had been looking forward to since the weekend… the day he was to announce he was officially becoming a Michigan Wolverine. Only 25 people were invited to the afternoon press conference, which consisted mostly of his support group of family and friends. That, however, didn’t prevent the big seven-footer from having butterflies in his stomach during his announcement.

“I was excited and nervous all at the same time,” a jubilant Cronin said. “I said, ‘thank you all for coming. After my senior year I will attend the University of Michigan and play for Coach John Beilein. I would like to thank my family and friends for their support.’”

Cronin was particularly appreciative of the support he received from his parents. They were as relieved the process was over as he was.

“My mom and dad are really happy for me,” he said. “It takes pressure off of them now that I have made my decision”.

The pressure was actually removed days ago. Cronin settled on his choice over the weekend.

“After I came up for the visit on Thursday May 10, I went back home and talked to my family and coach about it,” Cronin recalled. “Then when I made my decision I called Coach Beilein to tell him that I was coming to Michigan, he was very happy. Coach Beilein told me he wanted to hear me say Go Blue, so I said Go Blue to him. Then he said he was excited to get the chance to coach me.”

Cronin is the first commitment in the John Beilein era and leaves the Wolverines with two more scholarships to give for the 2008 recruiting class (assuming no late 2007 targets are added).
