Koger on UM: "Nothing Has Changed"

When GoBlueWolverine caught up with Toledo Whitmer TE/DE Kevin Koger, the long time Michigan fan had the Maize & Blue on top of his list. The Wolverines haven't allowed them self to grow complacent en lieu of that revelation, opting instead to recruit him even harder.

Michigan offensive coordinator Mike DeBord has been tireless in his efforts to harvest some of the top talent from Ohio this year, and thus far it’s paid off with verbal commitments from two of the Buckeye State’s best in Elliott Mealer and Brandon Moore. However, if things go according as planned, that is only the beginning.

Toledo Whitmer TE/DE Kevin Koger has long been a recruiting priority for DeBord and the Wolverines. The Glass City prospect made it clear that the feeling was mutual when he proclaimed the Wolverines his leader in an interview with GoBlueWolverine last month.

“I think Michigan has the upper-hand right now," Koger said at the time. "Coach DeBord… I talk to him every week. I call him a bunch of times a week. The coach I talk to the most is Coach DeBord. He said I can play early. It's all about how fast I pick up the system. I grew up a Michigan fan because my dad came from Michigan. I've been a Michigan fan all of my life."

When GoBlueWolverine caught up with him recently, he said that things were still status quo.

“Nothing has changed,” Koger said. “Coach DeBord is still recruiting me hard. He is cool. He texts me all of the time. Ohio State texts me sometime, but not as much as Coach DeBord. Michigan is still recruiting me the hardest.”

That distinction got a bit of a boost recently when DeBord picked up a tag-team partner to help him woo Koger to Ann Arbor. Mealer happens to be one of the Koger’s good friends and he hasn’t missed an opportunity to remind his pal how much fun it would be for them to play their college ball together.

“He has been ON ME,” Koger said of Mealer. “He is on that “Go Blue” thing big, man. He keeps saying, ‘You need to commit, you need to commit.’ I’m like, ‘Dang man, I will when I’m ready (laughing).’ I’ll make my decision probably during July sometime.”

In the meantime, Koger plans to take a few more visits, including a few to Michigan and one to a new destination.

“I’m going to camp at Michigan and Ohio State,” he said. “Actually, I’m going to try to make it up (to Michigan) before the camp, and then go to the camp too.”

“I’m probably going to go to West Virginia next week,” he continued. “West Virginia, Louisville, Illinois, and Michigan State are my newest offers. I’ll probably take a day off of school and go down (to West Virginia) next week. That’s about it right now.”
