If things go according to plan for the Michigan Wolverines on the recruiting trail over the next few months, Maize & Blue fans may start referring to Ann Arbor as “Lone Star North.” Lloyd Carr & company were successful in plucking three talented prospects from Texas last year, signing Ryan Mallett, Troy Woolfolk, and Brandon Herron. This year they are in very good shape two more prospects from the big oil state. Speedsters Daryl Stonum and Sam McGuffie both have Michigan very high on their list and each will be visiting Ann Arbor for the first time in a little over a week.
“I’m coming up Friday June 8th,” Stonum said to GoBlueWolverine. “I’ll stay up there the ninth and the tenth and come home that Monday. I’m just going to tour around and see the sites and stuff. It will be me Troy (Woolfolk), Brandon (Herron), Sam McGuffie and Ryan (Mallett). Ryan said we can chill with him. All of us Texas boys are going to hang out together and chill.”
Stonum long ago expressed a desire to choose a college before the start of his final prep campaign, and while he still has a timetable that calls for him to make a decision relatively early, he is prepared to push it back a tad if necessary.
“I might decide before the season but it will probably be sometime right at the beginning of the season,” he said. “It might be after the first, second, or third game or something like that.”
With his decision now just a few months away, Stonum has focused his attention on a select list of favorites. However, he isn’t quite ready to anoint one as the leader of the pack.
GoBlueWolverine will have more on Stonum in the coming weeks.
