Hale Franciscan (Chicago, IL) High’s Matthew Humphrey has the well-earned reputation of a long-range bomber. On the summer circuit the 6-6 guard has learned that those kinds of reputations can and often do precede you. Opponents have given his shooting ability the respect it deserves, doing everything in their power to prevent him from getting clean looks. Earlier in the spring that seemed to limit his effectiveness. Lately, however, he appears to be adjusting to the increased attention. Scout.com’s Evan Daniels described Humphrey as “dialed in” from long range at last weekend’s Memorial Day Classic in Nashville, Tennessee. Ever critical of his own game, Humphrey wasn’t quite as complimentary.
“I’ve been doing okay, I guess,” Humphrey said. “Things have been going better lately. I played pretty well the first couple of games in Nashville, but we lost over the weekend so it could have been better.”
One aspect of Humphrey’s basketball life that could not be going much better, however, is his recruitment. With an offer list that he recently said surpassed 20, the Windy City sharpshooter now has an array of viable college options. The University of Michigan became one of them earlier this month when headman John Beilein extended a scholarship offer. The fact that former Michigan football standout Tai Streets is Humphrey’s AAU coach might lead some to believe that the Wolverines benefit from frequent plugs, but he insists that that hasn’t been the case.
“He doesn’t really talk to me about Michigan too much,” said Humphrey. “He did tell me when he went down there for the (1997 National Championship) reunion that they were asking about me. Even the football players were.”
The inquiries only confirmed for Humphrey something that he already knew.
“It’s clear that they want me,” Humphrey said regarding Michigan. “They offered. They’ve talked about getting to come up for a visit, but I don’t know when I’ll be able to do it yet because of my schedule.”
Michigan’s official show of interest looks like it came right in time. Humphrey is currently on the verge of making his recruitment a bit more manageable.
“I’m trying to narrow down this list over the next few days,” he said. “I’m going to cut it down to five or six. I think Michigan is going to make it.”
“I want to make my decision right before my season starts,” he added.
GoBlueWolverine will have more on Humphrey in the coming days and weeks.
