Change of Plans for Stonum

Fort Bend Dulles (Sugarland, TX) wideout Darryl Stonum thought he'd be making his way up to Ann Arbor this weekend to get his first ever look at the University of Michigan. That was until a late change in plans caused the trip to be pushed back a few days. Are the Wolverines still in good shape?

“I’m coming up June 15th through the 17th,” Stonum said to GoBlueWolverine. “I just booked the flight. I was busy this week and Coach Jackson and Coach Soup (i.e. Erik Campbell) told me they had a camp going on the 17th through the 21st. I’ll be there for one day of the camp. They don’t want me to participate because they said they’ve seen enough. I’m still going to bring my cleats just in case, though. Everyone is going to want to see what the number one recruit can do, so I’m pretty sure I’m going to end up getting out there anyway.”

Before Stonum’s change of schedule, this weekend was shaping up as a Texas reunion of sorts. Not only was Stonum set to be in town, so too were Dulles teammates Troy Woolfolk and Brandon Herron, as well as Houston Cy Fair RB Sam McGuffie. All four prospects were looking forward to hanging out with Michigan freshman signal caller (and Texas native) Ryan Mallett. Now that the itinerary has changed Stonum hopes the get together can be rescheduled also.

“Troy is already up there and I don’t know if he is going to come back, but I’ll see,” Stonum said. “I know I’ll be up there with Brandon and Ryan though, and I’m going to talk to Sam and see if he is going to come up there too.”

While getting a chance to hang out with his prospective teammates is one of the purposes for the trip, it isn’t the most important. Without ever setting foot on campus Stonum sees Michigan as an excellent fit… both on the field and off. The visit will help him determine whether that belief is correct. As a matter of fact, his time on campus will be as much about figuring out what Michigan doesn’t have as figuring out what it does. When asked what it would take for another program to beat out the Wolverines, the talented youngster was unsure.

“I really don’t know,” he said, “that’s why I’m going up there. Every school that offers me… I always compare them to Michigan. I try to see what they have to offer that Michigan doesn’t. I really can’t find much so far. I’ve got to go up there now and see if I can find something.”

As strong as his feeling about Michigan is, Stonum still isn’t quite ready to publicly declare the Wolverines his favorite.

“It’s still five schools,” said Stonum. “Michigan, USC, Florida, Florida State, and Alabama. I’m going to try to (visit) USC and Florida, but I don’t know for sure that I will. If I can fit the other two schools by the end of the summer, then I’ll (visit) them too.”

Despite his reluctance to reveal his top school, Stonum acknowledges that Michigan is in very strong shape.

“It’s just how I interact with Coach Jack and Coach Soup,” Stonum said regarding what the Wolverines have going for them. “They seem like real players coaches. Coach Carr is real laid back. Plus Michigan is the only school whose quarterback’s number I have in my phone. I know (Ryan Mallett) and we often text each other. Sam (McGuffie) really likes the school. My other two teammates are going up there and they want me up there with them. They don’t put any pressure on me, but they always have a few jokes about me going there (laughing).”

“Whatever college I choose is going to be far away from my home, so I want to feel comfortable,” Stonum continued. “I feel comfortable with all of those guys.”

GoBlueWolverine will have more on Stonum in the coming weeks.
