Humphrey Part of Package Deal?

The Michigan Wolverines have been hot on the trail of Chicago shooting Matthew Humphrey, and the interest appears to be mutual. Recently, however, news of his desire to attend college with a good friend added a new element to his recruitment. Have Michigan's chances at the sharp-shooting star taken a hit?

When GoBlueWolverine caught up with Hale Franciscan (Chicago, IL) High SG Matthew Humphrey a few weeks back he was on the verge of trimming his list of suitors to a more manageable number. The personal deadline he set for doing so has now come and gone, but for the moment, he is keeping the results close to the vest.

“I have narrowed it down, but I haven’t had the chance to go over it with my mom,” Humphrey said. “She has been in and out of town recently. She told me I can’t put nothing out until I talk to her (laughing).”

Even though there still isn’t official word from Humphrey regarding which programs made the cut, he did address the Maize & Blue’s chances in the previous interview when he said, “I think Michigan is going to make it.” Yet another productive conversation with Coach John Beilein last week may have cemented the Wolverines’ position. That said, one issue that may be a limiting factor for Michigan (and a number of other programs), is Humphrey’s desire to attend college with good friend and AAU teammate Michael Dunigan. When asked if becoming teammates again at the next level is a high priority, the sweet-shooting youngster shed light on the matter.

“I think so,” he said. “Well…yes and no. That’s definitely a big option on the table. We’re trying to find that spot, and it could happen. We are being recruited by a lot of the same schools. We are going to take a couple of visits together.”

Dunigan, a big, physical, back-to-the-basket presence, was a Michigan target under the previous regime. However, he hasn’t been in the crosshairs of the Beilein-led Wolverines, and it seems unlikely that he will en lieu of Ben Cronin’s addition to the 2008 class. Fortunately for Michigan, Humphrey indicated that his desire to play with his good friend is receiving heavy consideration, it won’t be THE determining factor.

“I don’t think that will really move schools down,” Humphrey said regarding the programs that were recruiting him and not Dunigan. “I have some of those schools and he has some of those schools. We talk about it, but it’s not something we talk about all of the time because we know we want to do it. But at the same time, we’re each going to do what’s best for us.”

GoBlueWolverine will have more on Humphrey in the coming weeks.
