Detroit Southeastern wideout Fred Smith has long made clear his desire to wrap his recruitment up in the month of July. In an effort to get closer to a conclusion, he planned to get back up to the campuses of his two undisputed favorites; Michigan and Michigan State.
The four-star pass catcher had an impressive visit to East Lansing a few weeks ago in which the Spartans pulled out all of the stops. It included bringing Tom Izzo in to promote the possibility of Smith playing two sports if he were to commit to MSU. All that was left in the aftermath of that trip was for him to travel back to Ann Arbor for one last look. That visit would also give his dad the opportunity to take a look at the campus for the first time. A few tentative dates have been set over the past few weeks, only to see the trip postponed. Smith's most recent plan had him traveling to Michigan's campus next week, but that too looks to have been moved back.
"It was the 23rd that I was supposed to come up (to Michigan)," said Smith. "Then they told me they would be out of town. I'm probably going to come up for a 7-on-7. I've got to talk back with my coach. I had set the date as the 23rd and when I got back with Coach Campbell told me he wanted me to come up on a different day… when some players would be up there. He said a lot of the coaches would probably be out of town on the 23rd."
With the month of July previously targeted for his decision date, the questions now are when will he trip to Michigan and is there a possibility of not taking it before announcing his decision?
"I'm pretty sure… no I'm positive," Smith said regarding how sure he was about taking the final visit. "I'll visit Michigan later… sometime in the next month. In probably a good two or three weeks I'll visit Michigan."
"I know I'll make my decision before my season starts," he continued. "I've clearly made sure it is going to be over before the season starts."
Stay tuned to GoBlueWolverine next week for an in-depth feature with Smith about the criteria that he is weighing in his choice.
