U-M Escapes Injury Bug: The Drives, The Stats

With Mike Hart out with an ankle and Chad Henne going in and out with a shoulder, Michigan got help from Illinois on a dropped Illini punt in the 4th quarter that the Wolverines took in for the go-ahead touchdown. In a strange game of injuries and turnovers, Henne played tough and U-M escaped Champaign with a win. Here are the drives and the stats.

Illinois took the kickoff to the U-M 33. On the 3rd play Illinois hit a 26 yard touchdown pass.

Illinois 7, Michigan 0

U-M returned the kickoff to the 10 yard line. U-M got 1 completion then Chad Henne threw an interception on a tipped pass at the U-M 40.

The U-M defense made a great stand, sending Illinois backwards to the Illinois 39 on a 3rd down sack by Chris Graham.

U-M took the punt at the U-M 32, but went 3 and out including a 3rd down sack that hurt Henne's shoulder back to the U-M at the 29 at the 7:13 mark.

Zoltan Mesko launched a 66 yard punt to the Illinois 4, and went 3 and out.

U-M took the punt at the U-M 49 at the 5:46 mark.

With Henne hurt and Ryan Mallett in, U-M got 2 first downs, one on a 11 yard completion to Butler to the Illinois 33. The drive stalled at the Illinois 8, and U-M kicked a 24 yard field goal at the 1:21 mark.

Illinois 7, Michigan 3

SECOND QUARTER

Illinois took the kickoff at their own 10. Illinois got 4 first downs, led by a 23 yard run by Juice Williams, and scored at the 9:53 mark.

Illinois 14, Michigan 3

U-M took the ensuing kickoff at the U-M 20. U-M got 2 quick first downs, on a 30 yard completion to Adrian Arrington to the Illinois 33 and a 24 yard completion to Manningham to the Illinois 8, and then scored on a 8 yard TD pass to Manningham at the 8:01 mark.

Illinois 14, Michigan 10

Illinois took the ensuing kickoff at their 35, and went 3 and out.

U-M took the punt at their own 19 at the 5:50 mark. U-M got 1 1st down, but then Henne was sacked twice and U-M had to punt. There was a roughing the kicker penalty and U-M got new life at the U-M 29. U-M got a 1st down on a 29 yard completion to Manningham to the Illinois 42, another on 3rd down on a15 yard completion to the Illinois 15. On 3rd down again, Henne hit Arrington for a 14 yard TD at the :45 mark. However, Henne went out again, this time with a wrist.

U-M gained 343 yards, 229 passing and 114 rushing.
Illinois gained 253 yards, 116 passing and 137 rushing.

Henne was 18-26 for 202 yards and 2 TD's.
Juice Williams was 8-14 for 70 yards and a TD.
Eddie McGee was 6-12 for 46 yards.

Carlos Brown had 25 carries for 113 yards.
Rashard Mendenhall had 18 carries for 85 yards.

Manningham had 9 catches for 109 yards and a 2 TD's.

U-M took the kickoff to the U-M 11. With Mallett at quarterback (and Kraus at OC), U-M got 1 first down and had to punt.

Illinois took the punt at the Illinois 37. Illinois got 2 1st downs to the U-M 30, then stalled. Illinois missed a 47 yard field goal.

U-M started at the U-M 30 at the 10:07 mark. U-M got 2 first downs on a 20 yard Mallett scramble to the Illinois 48, and an interference call on Mario to the Illinois 37. But Mallett fumbled at the Illinois 30 at the 7:31 mark.

Starting at their 30, Illinois made 3 first downs on a18 yard scramble to the Illinois 48 and 2 ten yard runs. The drive stalled at the U-M 21 and Illinois kicked a 37 yard field goal at the 3:47 mark.

Michigan 17, Illinois 17

U-M took the ensuing kickoff at the U-M 28. U-M got 3 first downs on a 14 yard Carlos Brown run, a 24 yard Brown run, and a 12 yard run by Brandon Minor. But Mallett threw an interception at the Illinois 4.

FOURTH QUARTER

Illinois took the ball at their 4, got a first down on a roughing the passer, then punted from the Illinois 43.

U-M took the punt at their 22 at the 13:31 mark, and Henne came back in.

U-M got a first down on a 15 yard face mask penalty to the U-M 36, another on a hit out of bounds after a Mario completion, to the Illinois 48, and a 3rd on a 5 yard completion to Arrington to the Illinois 37. But the drive stalled and U-M punted at the 9:08 mark.

Illinois fumbled the punt and U-M recovered at the Illinois 13. oN the 3rd play, Arrington took the handoff on a fake end-around and threw a 13 yard TD pass to Manningham at the 8:12 mark.

Michigan 24, Illinois 17

Illinois started at their own 20, and went 3 and out.

U-M took the punt at the Illinois 47 at the 6:34 mark. U-M got a first down on a 21 yard completion to Mathews to the Illinois 29. The drive stalled but Lopata kicked a 39 yard field goal at the 3:49 mark.

Michigan 27, Illinois 17

Illinois took the ensuing kickoff at their own 9. After 2 first downs they turned it over on downs.

U-M ran time off the clock, then punted, then Illinois threw an interception on the first play, and U-M ran the clock out.

FINAL STATS

U-M gained 198 yards, 169 passing and 29 rushing.
Illinois gained 119 yards, 69 passing and 50 rushing.

Henne was 11-15 for 159 yards and 2 TD's.
Juice Williams was 7-9 for 50 yards and a TD.

Carlos Brown had 10 carries for 36 yards.
Rashard Mendenhall had 10 carries for 39 yards.

Manningham had 6 catches for 84 yards and a TD.

On defense, Brandent Englemon recorded 11 tackles; Jamar Adams had 7 tackles; Crable recorded 6 tackles including 1.5 tackles for loss, and forced a fumble; Chris Graham had 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack.
